Got this in a phone alert and email today.
You'd figure the Kamiak and Mukilteo voice alert would have been by now programmed to pronounce them properly, but that's probably another $16 Million.
Doesn't say anything about the kid even having access to a gun.
Who keeps a diary anymore?

"Officers from the Everett Police Department arrested an 18-year-old student from ACES High School yesterday when it was discovered that he was planning a school shooting. His plans were discovered by his grandmother, who then called the police. Upon searching the student’s possessions at his home, the police reviewed copies of his journal and were alarmed at the statements and detailed plans. With that information, the officers contacted ACES to advise them of the threat and arrested the student. He was booked into the Snohomish County Jail on probable cause for attempted murder due to planning and taking substantial steps toward executing a school shooting.
The student under arrest was a former Kamiak student who attended Kamiak for a part of the 2016 – 2017 school year. Police discovered journal writings that threatened Kamiak or ACES High School. Evidence suggested that he then choose ACES as his intended target. As a precautionary measure, Mukilteo police will increase their presence and visibility at Kamiak while the investigation continues.
The Mukilteo School District is grateful to the student’s grandmother for doing what she did in informing the police of what she found. Her actions may have saved many lives and underscores the importance that if you see or hear of something suspicious, you need to notify authorities. The school district is also very grateful to the Everett Police Department for their fine work in preventing what could have been a major tragedy. We are also thankful for the cooperation and support of the Mukilteo Police Department.
News of this nature is always alarming for all of us. Your child may come home with lots of questions, information, or fears. Please reassure your child that we are working with police and all other resources to support a safe and secure campus. I just want to remind you that we have resources here at Kamiak available for students to connect with, including administrators, school counselors, teachers, and staff.
Respectfully,
Mike Gallagher

Wow.

Assuming that the concerns are legitimate, good job Granny.

The Mukilteo School District and local PD are pretty sensitive to things of this nature since that house party shooting by a former Kamiak student a year and a half ago.

Update: May find some weed anyhow.

"I am currently meeting with Everett, Mukilteo and Washington State Patrol Police. With evolving information, they have asked for permission to conduct a school-wide police search exercise using police dogs We want to take every precaution available to us. The dogs will need free access to the campus. Accordingly, I want to close the campus completely beginning at 2:45 PM. The campus will be reopen this evening beginning at 6:00 PM. Any facility use event scheduled from 6 pm and later will go on as planned. Mike Gallagher (Principal)

Update
http://www.king5.com/article/news/crime ... -518703506

Officers responded to the house on the 10600 block of Holly Drive and were shown excerpts of the journal and were told the grandson had a semiautomatic rifle stored in a guitar case. As officers reviewed the journal, they were alarmed by the statements and detailed plans to shoot students and use homemade explosives, according to a press release.

Excerpts from the journal show the teen had been thinking about the shooting frequently and wanted to make it "infamous," according to probable cause documents.

Court documents state the young man wrote, "I can't wait to walk into class and blow all those (expletives) away," and "I need to make this shooting/bombing infamous. I need to get the biggest fatality number I possible can."

Prosecutors allege the suspect had inert grenades in his bedroom that he planned to fill with black powder along with the AK-47 hidden in a guitar case.

Is there a particular crime that they can charge the kid with? Underage possession of a gun? Other than that, he hasn’t really done anything illegal I think. Though there was that one law passed a couple years ago about confiscating guns from people who might be at risk.

This is the tricky part...pre-crime isn’t a crime but this kid needs to get help or be locked up.

Attempted murder, assault, and armed robbery, may be charged today.

"The 18-year-old was booked at the Snohomish County Jail on probable cause for attempted murder due to planning and taking substantial steps toward executing a school shooting. The student is also facing an assault charge for allegedly kicking an officer after he slipped out of one of his handcuffs and tried to escape Tuesday.

The suspect made his first appearance in court Wednesday and is being held on $5 million bail.

His defense attorney said he has no prior criminal history whatsoever. However, police believe the teen used the same AK-47 to rob a convenience store on February 12. Court documents state he wrote in his journal about how powerful he felt because of how scared the female clerk was.

I get what you're saying about pre-crimes, but I think conspiring to commit a serious crime is a crime in itself. Prosecution of conspiracy crimes just requires sufficient evidence to show that the defendant was serious enough about his plan to carry it out.

conspiracy generally requires more than one person planning to commit a crime and at least one of those people committing an overt act in furtherance of the conspiracy.

"To ban guns because criminals use them is to tell the innocent and law-abiding that their rights and liberties depend not on their own conduct, but on the conduct of the guilty and the lawless, and that the law will permit them to have only such rights and liberties as the lawless will allow...

For society does not control crime, ever, by forcing the law-abiding to accommodate themselves to the expected behavior of criminals. Society controls crime by forcing the criminals to accommodate themselves to the expected behavior of the law-abiding." - Jeff Snyder

Personal weapons are what raised mankind out of the mud, and the rifle is the queen of personal weapons. The possession of a good rifle, as well as the skill to use it well, truly makes a man the monarch of all he surveys. It realizes the ancient dream of the Jovian thunderbolt, and as such it is the embodiment of personal power. For this reason it exercises a curious influence over the minds of most men, and in its best examples it constitutes an object of affection unmatched by any other inanimate object.

I can't say for sure, but it seems there is substantial evidence this kid was planning an attack. "Substantial" is the operative word here.

The point is that paying attention to people and making a call if necessary is exactly what "they" say: if you see something, say something.

Yes, this is how it is supposed to be done.

And much more effective than taking away any magazine from a law-abiding citizen that holds 11+ rounds, or other draconian, anti-2A legislation that was detailed elsewhere in WaGuns in this still-active session.

I am for one, thanking "Granny" for her move. More citizens need to step up like her.

And yes, the kid still has all of his rights going forward. Better than being dead with other dead students.

Maybe the FIB should put Granny on their payroll. Seems with the number of failures in the FIB from 9/11/01, to the Clinton debacles and chronicles, to the Parkland shooting and so much more, they don't have a very good track record this century.

The main focus in a criminal charge usually hinges on the demonstrated intent of the suspect...and that suspect (for purposes of developing probable cause to arrest) is determined to have shown intent when he or she takes a "substantial step" toward the commission of the crime.

I would say that putting your intentions in writing, and having the materials to carry it out fulfill those guidelines.

While I would never blame the victim, it’s not a bad idea to teach your kids to be nice to the weird kids in school.

Backlash:
Students were asked not to bring guitar cases to school (for at least a couple weeks).
So, the kids in guitar class have to pack them in the rain or use the POS school guitars.
I should call and see if that applies to the violin players? Could have a Thompson in there.
