Moving to Seattle, running from CA, but don't worry

Hey guys. I have long been planning a move to either WA or OR and it looks like WA is the ticket. Before anyone gets crazy, I am running from CA for a few reasons but I am leaving their policies at the border. I am into guns, Camping, Overlanding, more shooting, Computers/Tech industry and I'd love to get deeper into USPSA at some point. If people are interested, can post a list of guns but atm, half my safe is illegal (Thank's CA). I have a 1988 Toyota MR2SC that can't pass smog because of some, shall we say performance parts. I have sat by powerless as they have shut down 2 of our local gun ranges for insane reasons, our freeways/bridges get blocked off monthly for stupid political protests, and even as I post this, 9/14, there will most surely be Violent protests in Berkeley as Ben Shapiro gives a speech.

Politically, we had everything from banning plastic bags to forcing porn stars to use condoms in videos at a state level. I am just done with all of the politics. I want to move to a state, earn money, and be left alone while I continue to further my hobbies while others don't try to make me illegal. I once was more liberal (socially) but as I have aged, I sorta realized I am much more Libertarian. "Let Gays marry and defend their families with firearms while being allowed to put whatever in their bodies" Libertarian. Everything I have read for the most part says with the exception of King Co, this is Washington. I have friends a bit further to the right who claim that Washington is no different than CA but it's ignorance... Having to be a lawyer to own firearms or modify your car is insane.

Now that you have some sort of a feeling of where I stand, I'd love to hear some opinions on a good place to live. I am interviewing for a job today in tech in Seattle (I wish I could avoid it but working in tech has that price). I have to commute so I was wondering if there are any people in a similar situation. I want to consider the following:

Price: ill be making 35K a year so I won't be able to live like a fat cat.
Crime: I am positive that any crime in WA (with the exception of Tacoma from what I read) will be less in most areas. I like not being murdered
Gun laws: This seems to be Avoid King CO
Smog/Emissions: My car most likely won't pass because it has cams
Politics: I don't really want to deal with constant protests from authoritarians
Commute: The job is in downtown Seattle - I am more than willing to drive to Kent and commute in by train (or other options)

Things that can help me out:
I currently own 2 Toyota Land Cruisers that can pass anything but a gas station so some light snow or road conditions aren't an issue
A friend who shares many of these same values is running for the boarder as well so splitting rent will make it easier
While I hate commuting, I hate high densities of people more so I'd be willing to commute up to an hour.

Let me know what you guys think and any advice you guys have. I'd love to hear from people who have interest in any of the hobbies I listed above. I noticed a race track or 2 and I am sure there are countless places for expeditions/Overlanding/Offroading. I am also into Ham radio if that's something people are into. Glad to meet some like minded people! Thanks.

**PS: I realized that saying I hate people might make me sound like a jerk. I want to live without having extremely concentrated groups of people. IE Houses, not Apartments or Condos. I need some space :)

Welcome to the party Brandon and good luck with your job search. Pretty much everything is an hour commute into/out of Seattle.... So no matter where you chose, you will be in good company. A little north and a little south of Seattle will find you more affordable housing.... but its slim pickings out there from what I hear. I appreciate you leaving Cali politics behind, we need more pro-gun votes up this way.

Welcome to the forum and eventually the state.

If you plan on living off strictly your wages and no savings, I don't want to sound harsh but $35k is going to make it tough to find an affordable place to live solo in a decent area. The further North or South you go away from Seattle will be more affordable.

As you've noted, living in King county can be problematic, if you're going to be working in downtown and are looking for some space, you might consider south Snohomish county or north Pierce, but your commute's probably going to be more than an hour for either. When I first started working at MSFT back in the '90's, I lived in Tumwater in Thurston county, 85 miles one way to work. I spent about three hours a day commuting which sucked. Moving to east King county gave me back those three hours/day, and because we're far enough out, none of our vehicles are required to be smogged. Trying to do that today with the increase in traffic would probably cost you four hours a day.

Just out of curiosity, what kind of tech are you interviewing for? The reason I ask is because $35k/year is not very much for a tech worker in the Seattle area, even for a junior person. That's less than $17/hour which'll make it tough to live anywhere in King county. Theoretically you could get a job flipping burgers for just a bit less than that (don't hold your breath and don't expect to work a 40 hour week, or get any benefits, but I digress).

Future Welcome to WA and a current welcomewgo

At 35k/year, it's going to be down right impossible to try and find any decent living accommodations anywhere close to Seattle. Basic rental rules are you have to make at least 3x rent in monthly wages. That will put you in housing around $900/month. it doesn't matter if you have a roomie, typically both people on leases have to qualify as individuals (unless you are married). That basically will force you to an apartment, unless you get lucky.

With Seattle having $15 min wage, that's 31k/year right now, so I am hoping that your 35 was a typo.

regardless, you will love the freedom vs. Cali. We are facing some tough times though, always having to fight to protect ourselves from BEING California. It'll be nice to add you to that fight.

Trust me, I have no intent to wish this crap on anyone. My room mate and I drive to BLM land or Reno just to use our AR15's... one time, we met a local in Carson City who planned on driving to Fresno and he asked about bringing guns... We explained even basic transportation laws and I showed off my Rad Lock device (that oddly enough, I'll leave on my gun. It's a bullet button that can be turned on or off with nothing more than a small screwdriver. It might be useful for new shooters or something). After an hour of conversing, I think he pretty much decided not to bring guns at all lmao. Our laws have gotten even worse since then... I insist that my AR15 stays configured as an M16 (A gun I used and loved while in the Navy) and they yet again tried to ban them... I just bought a Chiapa rimfire upper and bam... Rimfire, go soak your head CA... I can't say politically that I am conservative, and I am not a 1 voter issue but in general, I am in the camp of which side of the issue allows people more freedom. It's worked well for me this far

L_O_G - ATM, I have a little nest egg to make this process easier. I have literally 0 debt so that helps. I will know more about the job soon but the 1st person recommended me at the top of their pay for the position and she says within 8 months, based on resume, I'd most surely move to the next position which would lead to money. It might be a little tight but 0 debt or dependents means I can tighten up the belt a bit to make it work. Thanks for the advice! I am super excited.

Delliottg - The position is a basic help desk position for Voip systems... it's 18 an hour, and it's not much but anything is more than I am currently making and most of the interest in my resume has been crap like Uber or statefarm. I might not be putting it in the right place it seems because I am far more qualified. I am just trying to get my foot in the door, any door at this moment. Any advice would be welcome. I'd love a work from home remote IT support job but it seems like that's hard to find.

It seems like this number won't be enough. I do receive around 1k a month for some medical disabilities from the Navy, is that something that would tip the scales?

There's nothing wrong with living in King county or Tacoma. On $35k a year I suggest finding a room or attached apartment to rent.

Probably couldn't hurt. By basic rule that will give you an extra $300 towards a rental, which will put you in the next bracket up as far as quality. I think your best bet is to get online and start looking for rentals. Use Zillow etc. Then post up some of the areas that you have found and that you can afford (don't post the actual rentals, just the general area). We have TONS of members from the King County are and we can easily help give you pro-con of areas as you are narrowing down.

What is your resume like? We also have TONS of people on here who work in technology.... There may be a chance that your VoIP position could be short lived if your resume is stronger than just customer support.

Considering I own 2 Land Cruisers and an MR2, I think in a few hours, when I do this interview, I am going to have to get some details on this promotion down the road. Maybe anyone here knows a really good place to upload my Resume to find something a little better? My resume and 15 years of experience really should be worth more but I am sick of living here... I really gotta get out of here! I wish I had a complete income calc that would check debt vs income ect ect... it seems like 18 an hour would lead to take home pay near 30k a year...

Sounds like your MR2 will not pass the emissions test in King or Snohomish county just so you have a heads up. if it is important that ou keep it you might try north or sound of those locations. It`s a little over an hours commute but Skagit county does not have testing, maybe others can point out other areas that are the same. Glad you are escaping Commifornia. I am sure you`ll love to make it to a group shoot some of these guys have some really nice toys. Let us know when you make it North

Thank you. Yeah, I didn't modify it but this last smog here in CA, it cost me a brand new cat to pass, and I only just passed from what I was told. The PO did most of the mods and once the car was stolen, I got sick of putting money into it. I just bought a RHD Toyota Diesel Land Cruiser imported from Japan so I am much more interested in spending money on that. I have some nice toys as well but some of them are crippled by stupid buttons or shark fins to save babies... My Tavor SAR looks awful man!!!

No emissions if its over 25 years old I believe. Also check out the Shipyard in Bremerton. Lots of work there.

It's a 1988, and the Diesel Land Cruiser is a 91. The Petrol Cruiser is a 94. That should be good. The 94 will be on the sales block once the Diesel is finished

Welcome to WaGuns, Brandon! :wavey:

As far as gun laws go, it doesn't matter where you live; Washington has "state pre-emption," which means that cities, counties, etc. are not permitted to pass their own gun laws. Gun laws are the same state-wide. That said, some fine print:

- The city of Seattle has passed a tax on guns ($25) and ammo (5 cents/round, 2 cents/round for rimfire) that per the bullshit courts is not prohibited by state pre-emption. So if you actually buy a gun or ammo in Seattle, it will cost you more. No big deal, just drive outside city limits.
- Cities like Seattle are constantly fighting against state pre-emption because, as you can expect, they want to pass their own anti-gun laws. Hopefully we can keep pre-emption forever, but who knows.
