This is what happened to a federal fusion round. I’m curious if I should contact a gunsmith or maybe was it just a one off issue. First time it’s ever happened.

Welcome to WaGuns!

This is from a Ruger M77, bolt-action rifle?

If you've put a lot of rounds through the gun and the fired brass all looks good, and this is a one-off, then I'd keep at it.

If you haven't shot it much, well, I'd look at the other fired brass and make a judgment call. :)

I say that it's probably a one-off, but if there are other warning signs then you might get the headspace checked in the gun.

Federal brass is the worst for reloading. It is soft, and does not hold up at all - good for 2 reloads tops, then trash it or suffer the consequences. By comparison, older military surplus brass will reload 6-8 times using medium loads, trimming and annealing at least once mid way. Looks like their brass quality is holding up to traditional expectations. One would expect to at least be able to touch off the original load trouble free though. I think you had a one off.

Weird..I guess my 8-10x reloaded and annealed federal match brass and LC ( Federal) Should all be tossed out..Or Not.

Headspace check is a 10min job at any real gunsmiths shop. If its out , it needs addressed. If its tight..Contact federal with that picture and lot number to see if its recalled. Almost looks like your FP punctured the primer as well so may be time for a good take everything part clean inspect and re assemble job.

Lake City military brass is not Federal standard commercial ammo brass, never was. Match brass is not standard Federal commercial ammo brass either. Federal standard commercial ammo brass is what is in play here, and my experience with it, is less than stellar performance.

Depending on your loads, and judging by your comments on your brass preparation, you are a careful, meticulous reloader. You will get all of the life and performance possible out of a piece of brass, obviously.

Federal standard commercial ammo brass has never been my friend for longevity in my M1'S, or my M1-A's. It may be slightly different in bolt guns, but it is not for me based on past performance.

Others had already covered if all the ammo from that box performed as expected with the exception of the pictured round, it was probably a one off. If not, have the gun checked.
