This place is due for another cleaning (the last clean-up was 1 year ago - see more in this thread). I was up there on Saturday, and there was a fair amount of trash all over the place...lots of steel cases and shotgun shells as well. It's one of my favorite spots, and I'd hate to see it closed down due to mismanagement/abuse. I'll organize the clean-up and attempt to coordinate with DNR, but I'd like some input as far as who would join and dates you are all available. I realize summer is almost upon us, and that means lots of people traveling/busy, but if you are nearby and can lend a hand or two, it would be much appreciated.

Weekends that I am available:
  • June 8-9
  • June 22-23
  • June 29-30
  • July 6 (busy on the 7th)
  • July 13-14
  • July 27-28

EDIT TO UPDATE: Let's aim for the morning of Saturday, July 6.

Some info about the pit:
  • It's just off Sultan Basin Road, on the way to Spada Lake.
  • Parking is limited (5-6 vehicles max), so carpooling from another location in town makes sense if the clean-up crew is large. Last time, everyone met at the Park & Ride in Sultan. Discover Pass is required to be displayed when parking there.
  • It's about an 80-yard walk down a dirt path from the parking area to the pit, and there are a couple of short but steep dips in the trail, so wheelbarrows are extremely helpful for transporting supplies/trash.
  • The pit gets a lot of direct sun exposure during the day, so it can get pretty hot out there; prepare accordingly.

If you frequent this pit and would like it to stay open, or if you've never been and are looking for a new place to shoot, we'd love to have your help in the continued stewardship of this spot. There aren't many spots left like it, and it would be a shame to lose it over a few hours' work.

Please chime in if you can make it. Or PM me if you prefer.

Has anyone else responded? Is this pit even still open? I had heard it was closed down.

I am interested and could make any of those weekends work except 13-14 of July.

The pit is still open, and it gets a fair amount of use. The more use it gets - and the more trash that accumulates - the sooner it will be closed down. That's why this clean-up needs to happen, and soon.

Thanks. Hopefully we get some more responses soon and can get something on the calendar that works for the majority. I really don't think we need a huge crew to do this; the pit isn't that big. 10 guys with rakes, buckets, and wheelbarrows can probably have the whole thing done in about 3 hours - maybe less. That leaves plenty of time to shoot afterwards. :thumbsup2:

I went last year...it was a Blast!!
I would love to do it again, but I am due for back surgery in June. I might be able to make it, if later in July. I can bring people and supplies. Not sure how much cleaning I can do.

Drag a couple kids/buddies along - they can do the work for you! :thumbsup2:

Rita & I can probably make this again, she sometimes has meetings on Saturday late mornings, so if it's on one of those Saturdays, she likely won't make it. I've got a wheel barrow for moving stuff, as well as various tools of destruction. I may be able to recruit some friends who have young sons with lots of energy.

What dump facility did you use for disposing of the trash last time?

It's already in the works.
Unfortunately, one of my friends used to carry most my stuff, has his own stuff to carry now.
From never owning/shooting a gun, to the proud owner of Sig P320 and a S&W Sport 2 in a couple months-haha
I should have 3-4 with me...depending on the day. (people, more guns of course)

July 13-14 does NOT work for me either.

I would prefer as soon as possible, but the 8th is likely too soon at this point.
June 22-23 would be my preference.

We moved the bagged trash to the side of the road and left it there. I believe the DNR scheduled it to be picked up.

I may be going up June 29th in the morning. I’ll bring a few bags and stuff to clear out what I find.
Suggestions on collecting and disposing of brass and other casings?

Have you set a date up yet? I'd be interested in showig up & help out a few hours. I have been cleaning the Darrington pit since last year. Every weekend I take out several buckets of shotgun hulls and buckets of steel rifle & pistol cases.
There is always more garbage by the following weekwnd to pick up.

Some of the crap there can be burned up if you get a fire going.

I toss the shotgin hullsin a friends garbage dumpster. The steel rifle & pistol cas3s I toss in the metal recycling dumpster at the Arlington Transfer Station.
The brass I clean up to reuse or to trade for what I can use.

I'm still trying to figure that part out - my extended family keeps making (and changing) summer plans, so it has been difficult to commit to a date just yet. I think it will be in July sometime. Even if only a handful of us can make it, it'll be better than nothing!
