Got the idea from a comment on a commercial product page. Absolutely brilliant. Found a spot for one in my bag immediately. Just about any commercial building uses these keys to operate the exterior spigots.

Avoiding urban sprawl in a “get home” mode is going to be difficult for most people. Having the key to potable water could be an enormous saving grace for yourself and others. Could you do the job with your multi-tool? Probably, but I’ve met some stubborn valves before. If you’re trying to remain low key, quick and quiet is optimal. Can’t believe it never occurred to me.

A link to what you are talking about?

Heavy/bulky for a bug out bag... but perhaps more versatile and multi use

Yeah, single use tools are not ideal.

The flip side of that coin is that multi-tools often suck at all but a couple things. I see compromise in either choice.

yep, I can't think of a single tool that is more useful, not much cannot be fixed with a pair of vice grips and some duck tape

I'm considering a sillcock key, too. It was one of the items mentioned in Creek Stewart's recent BOB webinar series and it hadn't occurred to me before. (It was a very good series, by the way. Not sure if it's still available on his website but it would be worth looking for.) I need to keep my pack light so I can't cram everything in there that I'd like to, still rolling around the sillcock key as a possibility though.

Small size needle nose vice grips. I carry one at work and they work good on the locks between rooms on the train. Lots of other uses too. On the flip side I also carry one of the sillcock keys too and it has a bottle opener in the handle.
