A eye or head wound would quickly put you in harms way. sent from my apple pet You guys are describing everything that's in my truck 24/7. I'd never really considered the usefulness of my standard field loadout for a SHTF situation, but it's looking better and better.

If this is a true BOB and not a GHB different fire starting methods are good. I've started making my own using dryer lint, egg carton and wax or long strike anywhere matches, toilet paper and wax. Both work great! They burn long and water proof

Thoughts on putting a 22 pistol in the bag ? ammo is light and guns are not that much . The only problem is when I leave the bag in the car .

If you are going to keep a firearm in the vehicle at all times, then I would suggest finding a storage area that is not obvious. If a tweaker breaks into the trunk, that bag is the first thing he will grab. By using one of the cheapy cable lock boxes for a pistol, you can mount it up under a seat, or (and a lot of vehicles have this space) under one of the rear speakers, and anchor it down so they have to work for it i fthey do find it. You know it's there, but others don't. If it's truely an emergency, you can rip out the covering and get to the firearm (store the key in the ghb). Just remember to remove it if you ever have to go to Canada. They won't like it if they find it at the border!
I do store extra mags in my GHB. There are 6 of them loaded in the GHB. And another 6 stored with the extra 1911 I have stowed away. I carry a 1911...so 12 of my mags are like 4 18rd high cap mags for a 9mm. ((I am seriously considering getting a 9mm Berreta/Taurus, just to get fewer mags. not that the weight will change that much.))
.22 vs ?? - Old arguement - not to be rehashed here. However I will say that most LEOs carry 40. And in a SHTF situation that might become the most commonly found ammo.
On Adding a pistol on a GHB- A best option in my opinion is a carbine that uses the same mags as your EDC and some high cap mags. It acts as reserve ammo, and gives you extra mags in general. So why haven't I done that? I have yet to find a high cap 1911 mag that works reliably, and getting a carbine in 45 is hard. Running a MechTech means losing your pistol, or having to store an extra pistol frame with the carbine upper... there are still no high cap mags... and the price is getting steep with all the purchases to get to that point. (( I swap out to 9mm...I might be able to mod the sub2000 that takes Berretta mags to ork with Taurus mags.)) Now if you are running a Glock EDC, you'd be foolish not to hunt down a sub2000 and run happy sticks.
However there is a lot to be said for having two concealed handguns that use the same mags too.

My thought on more than a basic handgun in a BoB is why bother with a longarm, unless you are out in the woods, or in a war zone? For around here? Whatever handgun you like is sufficient for personal protection.

You've got trioxane fuel, but no folding stove? Got something to heat water in? Most of that could be cleverly packaged inside a USGI canteen cup stuck inside a MOLLE canteen pouch.

I like those bars, but I'd toss something savory in too, even if it's just MRE cheese spread, because my experiments with using those sorts of bars left me craving something savory.

It doesn't work very well - especially on one brand. I forget which one. EDIT:

Most (all?) Ration bars seem designed for a supplement/snack or for being at rest.
