Katadyn and others do not use chemicals but silver impregnated ceramic filters and preferable, if you can pump.

Depends on your circumstances.

Like I said in a situation where your only water is mostly a mud puddle this stuff would be awesome. I would use it to get rid of the solids and then run it through my regular water filter.
