So for a disaster scenario... be it earthquake, meteor, plane crash, EMP from something (sun or man made).
How far is your daily commute? What roads or paths lay between you and home? Are there bridges or other structures that may become obstacles to getting home.
Ideally one would be able to drive home but with any major disaster scenario - that is really a dream. Jammed traffic with road closures will make driving difficult to almost impossible.
Have you ever mapped out your daily commute?
I used to ride a bicycle to and from work so I know the layout off using trails and such and it’s a true eye opener to see the other side off the road type of view.

Drive from Arlington to Everett and then take bus or train to downtown Seattle. Reverse in the afternoon for every workday.

My commute is about 12 miles, it takes about 25-30 minutes in the morning, and about 45-60 minutes on the way home. Major problem would be if the two bridges into Duvall somehow became impassable. I could still get across the river, there are bridges further both north & south, and I'd have to make up my mind whether I wanted to swim or hike to get home. There are few other places I'd need to worry about.
With two artificial knees and a grumpy back, I still think I could walk it in four or five hours. I'd be beat and dehydrated, but pretty sure I could do it. I know it takes me just over twenty minutes to walk a mile when we take the dog out for a walk. Since I'd be moving with more purpose (and not having to wait for a dog to sniff at every bush & sign), I'd hope I could do them a bit faster than that. I know the last few miles would be a slog.

Usually 10-15 seconds, from my bedroom or living room to my office. Own the company, generally work from home. When I do have to travel to a customer site I charge them for travel time. $200+ takes the edge off my commute.

maybe 5 miles as the crow flies but takes about 45 minutes. 3 miles by car, then a foot ferry to bremerton, then a walk about a mile. If the ferry went down I could probably walk home in 3 hours or grab a bike and do it in an hour.

I have a long commute, but a good one. Exactly 60 miles. Straight out a state highway in a vanpool to and from work. Beautiful scenery. No traffic or obstacles really other than distance. If SHTF, I'd just hope my wife could gather up the kids and get themselves and our shit to my work and would bunker down there. I work in a self sustaining town that is about as defensible as it gets if need be.

Used to live in Marysville and work took me as far south as Tacoma. Back then the plan was to give me 5 days to return home or move on w/o me and I’d have to catch up. Assuming 20miles / day foot travel. Nowadays, work only takes me as far South as Bellevue regularly, so we’ve trimmed down the wait time. I also figure alternate means of travel, but plan on worst case scenario. I carry a set of equipment keys everywhere, I’m not above driving a wheel loader or dozer 20 miles home....
