I know it’s convenient and we rely on our phones so much.

Just a precautionary note, if you rely too heavily on your phone for any long term disaster scenarios by using apps for maps or communication.

Power is going to be the biggest worry. Your phone uses a lot of battery.

Also and more importantly I want to point out that some apps will need to be updated or it won’t work. So, you can have it downloaded but if it needs a new update it may block you from using it when you most need it. Lesson learn is to frequently check for updates.

Also - if you haven’t downloaded - and there is no signal - you are most likely not downloading it during a disaster without signal or power.

Maps
But do look at downloading basic maps for offline use. Zoom into the areas that is most important and have a general wide map of your area.

The only way to survive SHTF is to go old school, print any info you think you may need cause your phone will be worthless if the grid (internet) goes down. Oh and get a compass and learn how to use it ASAP.

I'm guessing this stems from the report of people receiving death notifications via amateur radio from the hurricane?

If you had to pick, would you want an emergency radio to hear area updates or a communication radio to talk with other people?
