Hey all … Fairly experienced reloader here (10+ years). Last couple batches of 44 magnum have produced oddly inconsistent muzzle flashes. Some are “normal” 2-3’ or so, some are “wimpy” at 6” or so, and some shots have no flash AT ALL.

Should I be concerned?… any thoughts as to why/how this could be happening? Is this a primer thing?.. or a powder thing?

Details:

Caliber: .44 mag
Powder: H110 (“full” load, halfway between minimum and maximum listed)
Individually weighed (so no variance) powder charges.
Bullet: happens with both 180gr and 240gr bullet loads
Federal large pistol magnum primers.
Heavy crimp on bullet (with Lee factory crimp die)
Cronometer shows consistent fps on loads with huge muzzle flash and those with none. FPS matches those expected by the load listed.
Accuracy seems unaffected by muzzle flash (or lack there of)

Gun: Taurus Raging hunter 6.75” barrel

Any thoughts appreciated. Have videos if anyone’s reeeally interested.

Dan

It sounds like you’ve done everything right, including using an appropriate powder. If everything else looks and feels right, then I’m with hartcreek, it doesn’t sound like an issue.

Muzzle flash can be hard to see, depending on lighting. Is it possible that you just aren’t seeing it every time? Are you using slow-motion video?

I get inconsistent muzzle flashes too. I use the same recipe/bullets.
Not a big deal. They all hit the target (most of the time)
You'll see in this slow mo that shot #1 is flash, shot #2 is no flash.

^^ This!

Muzzle Flash is the worst "measure" of anything.

Thanks all. Yeah, I did confirm with a slow-motion video. Although I’m still VERY curious about the science behind why this occurs, I feel much better.

The physics of light transmission would give you a major headache. It is much easier to use a chrono and look at your primers.
