I found this mangled 30.06 mess while out brass hunting in Crapital forest.
Just a reminder to pay close attention to what your doing. I’m willing to bet the person that touched off this round had a bad day and probably destroyed the firearm. So none of this :bonghit: :thumbsup2:

That’s odd….

My bet: Someone put that cartridge on the ground and then shot at the primer.

I think it’s almost impossible that that cartridge went off inside a gun.

My thoughts exactly, it definitely wasn’t inside the chamber when that happened it may have fired out of battery if the extractor was was locked up on the case somehow. But seeing as how it was left up in the Capital Forest, some moron did not have a good day.

I don’t know. Looks like an extractor mark to me. But yeah I suppose it could’ve been shot from the rear

Well, since the case is blown wide open, I think the only way that it could have been inside a chamber is if the entire chamber came apart. The case needs space to blow open like that.

Anything that is a distraction, be it people coming in to the work area or drinking/toking can and will cause FUBARS. It’s best to be sober and in your right mind when you belly up to the press..

When I pick brass up at the pits and when sorting range brass that I buy I come across brass in that shape. I have a small container somewhere with cases like that.
I also have a collection or live range ammo. Some of the steel case rifle & pistol ammo is really rusted up. Mostly ammo from semi auto calibers, lots of live 22lr and live shotgun shells.

Cracker bomb. Fill case nearly full of powder, place firecracker inside and if smart use a really long fuse. Dang loud and dangerous.

Chance it was thrown against a rock and primer went off?
To me it seems like a reasonable explanation, due to experience from some really stupid kid that was too afraid to inform parents and then shrapnel causing problems humping 70lbs ALICE on the back and Army doctors making accusations of playing with live rounds during some live fire practice, because that stupid kid definitely would've notified MEPS of shrapnel in the calf during interview and physical...

Have seen this before at base range.
Delayed ignition of a primer. Also called a hangfire..
Did not wait a full 20 count before withdrawing round.
Should be some soiled shorts nearby... " But you can leave those lay"
