I got a bunch of nice .357 fmj bullets with brass jackets from RMR but they don't have cannelures. They work fine for .38 spl plinking rounds with just a very slight amount of bullet creep. I'd like to load them in some .357 magnum rounds. I have found a very limited amount of information about using the Lee collet style crimp die for magnum loads in straight walled cartridges. It sounds like that die will do the trick as far as holding the bullet in place, but I'm wondering if that type of crimp will shorten the life of my casing more than the regular roll crimp from my factory crimp die. I've considered getting a cannelure tool, but they're pretty pricey. Has anybody here used the Lee collet style crimp die for .357 magnum loads?

Are you referring to the Lee Factory Crimp Die?

If so, they work very well and, when used properly, brass life does not suffer.

The key is to not get too aggressive with the crimp.

Start lighter and work your way into the final setting.

Take a measurement of the OD before expanding. Start to,lower the crimp die down until the neck OD is -0.0020 from your starting measurement.
