 Reloading manual?

I’m trying to find a good reloading manual with some 9mm recipes. So far, I’ve tried the Lyman, Hornady, and the 2020 Hodgdon annual but none of them have what I’m looking for.

The Lyman had like 8 recipes. Hornady has recipes only for Hornady brand bullets, and the Hodgdon has literally 1 recipe for 147gr bullets.

I’m looking for something pretty flexible as I’ll be loading 115gr or 124gr round nose for regular plinking/practice. And 147gr for USPSA matches.

What do you all use?

I use the Hornady, Lyman and Lee manuals, plus online sources.

The Hornady just has Hornady bullets, but those bullets are usually similar to non-Hornady bullets so I'll use the data as long as the bullet is the same type.

The Lyman has a lot more for lead bullets, which can be good or bad depending on what you use.

The Lee manual is (I think) just a compilation of data from other sources, but it really has a lot, including more data for plated bullets than my other manuals have.

Of the ones I use, I'd say the Lee is the most useful.

Thanks. I just returned the Lyman because it didn’t have much in the way of 9mm data. I’ll probably do the same for the other two I just got.

The Lee manual is on its way from Amazon but won’t be here for a bit. Since it seems to be a compilation of others, maybe I’ll find what I’m looking for there.

No matter which manual you use, at some point you’ll almost certainly have to make some judgment calls about using data for similar bullets. There are tons of different bullet manufacturers out there.

Exactly which bullets are you wanting to load?

There are so many variables that the manual is just going to be a starting point

Given that, I just look around online for what other people are loading. After the 10th guy posts that he's using x amount of y powder behind z bullet you get a pretty good idea of where to start

I'm loading 147gn with 3.4g of titegroup for shooting suppressed. Without the suppressor they drop like a rock. Not sure if they would meet the minimum power requirement for shooting competition. I don't have a chrono

I have a couple different flavors of 147gr coated bullets on their way to me to try out. And I also have some 115gr plated round nose coming from Everglades too.

Down the road, I will might load 45 and 40/10mm. I’ll eventually load some 223/556 too. But just starting with 9mm for now.

Got a few manuals (Lyman, Speer, Nosler) in addition to online sources.

Some data missing, e.g. some weights in the books but found online.

I use the lightest load then work up to something tolerable that reliably works the slide.

Batch of ten rounds, verify, then 20 rounds, verify, then run final verification-validation for that batch at 50-100 rounds. Document in a spreadsheet. Any error in powder or operation, go back and readjust.

I'd use lead data for the coated bullets; find data that's for the same bullet weight and shape. For the plated bullets, you'll probably have data in the Lee book, but again verify bullet weight and shape. Or, for plated bullets start between lead and jacketed data, again for bullets of the same weight and shape.

If in doubt, feel free to post up specifics here, and we will help!

I will also recommend the Lee. I have a few others but the Lee is what I reach for. As Steve stated it is a compilation of other sources so you get a much broader range of information covering more calibers and powders in ONE place. The other ones tend to stick to "their" product line so you get a narrow offering for the obvious reasons.

There's also the Hodgdon Reloading Center, for Hodgdon and IMR powders:
https://www.hodgdonreloading.com/node

They don't have a wide variety of bullets though, so you need to make some judgment calls.

These used to be available all the time. I have them for most cals I reload, but not 9mm.

They are a compilation of all the major reloading manuals. Might Google one up somewhere?

I saw those in my search on Amazon but some of the reviews said they were mediocre photocopies. Maybe I’ll give one a shot though.
