I just spent 2 hours looking at gorgeous photos catching up on this thread. My oldest bolt action is a 1931 Winchester Model 54 with a '57 Lyman Peep and Ought -06 caliber. I believe 1935 was the last year the M54 was made before being replaced by the M70. The ONLY difference was the drop plate added in in M70. With the M54, you have to shuck your corn to empty the chamber. Glass action. I can't believe these aren't fetching more cash than a Pre-64 M70. I sold a 1925 first year model , actually traded, for a Ruger 1979 .44 Magnum. The reason I traded was the 1925 M54 wasn't as accurate as the 1931 year I have shown here. Ok I'll play VZ24 entered Czech army service 1936. Attachment: 20190501_184117.jpg Attachment: 20190501_184154.jpg Captured upon 1939 German invasion of Czechoslovakia. Taken to German Army depot, refitted (to be more like a 98k) and reissued to Wehrmacht soldier. 1. Wrist sling deleted and plugged with wood. Attachment: 20190501_184104.jpg 2. Front sling swivel deleted. Attachment: 20190501_184122.jpg 3. Follower adapted from Czech "will close on empty" to German "will not close on empty". 4. Original German sling. Attachment: 20190501_191107.jpg 5. German depot markings (not on this rifle) Great shooter, Czech VZ24's are way better than 98k's. |

Czech VZ24 JC in 7mm. The story on that they are a special light weight version (known as VZ24 JC) ordered in 1930 by China. They were ordered in 8mm Mauser but China did not pay for the rifle. 1932 Brno re-barreled them to 7mm Mauser and sold 15,000 of them to the Brazilian Sao Paulo Revolutionaries during the Brazilian Civil War. How did I miss this thread? What qualifies as "old"? There are some great examples of fine old bolt actions in here already. Not sure I can compete, but here are some of my humble submissions... Husqvarna M-146 chambered to the 9.3x57mm cartridge       Remington 521-T     Steyr Mannlicher 1910 chambered to 9.5x57mm w/ spring loaded rear peep sight, butt stock cartridge trap, and factory letter

You fellas have posted some nice Danzig and Suhl Mausers- love those Swedes as well. The double set triggers on those Steyr Mannlichers are always a treat. That particular rifle is the best of the 3 that I own, it also kicks the hardest! More to come... |

Haven't had any luck locating photos of the re-barreled Steyr, but here is my 8x57, along with a sporterized Type 38 Arisaka: Steyr Mannlicher Carbine 1908         Arisaka Type 38 w/ 26" Douglas bull barrel, chambered to .22-6mm
