Hi there fellow shooters! I wanted to start a thread to see if we can put a date together, so we can do a clean and shoot bbq at the triangle pit. Looks like we have one scheduled in greenwater for May 21st. So by looking at the calendar I was thinking of June 4th. Which would be the weekend after the meeting that is being held about the future of these shooting areas. I have talked to Barry Godfrey of the DNR and he said he can provide trash bags and shut the pit down if we can all agree on a date. He sounds like a guy that wants to help and wants to shoot. So if people can mark their calendars, and post a reply to see how many people we can get to attend it would be a great help. The future of our shooting areas counts on us to be proactive on making sure things are clean and safe in the forest. I fear our neglect to get involved and speak up can cause us to loose our precious shooting areas. Thank you shooter's!

Generally a location is helpful. I don't know where the "Triangle Pit" is.

If you look this website has a map to the Capitol forest triangle pit. You can Google map Triangle pit or Waddell Creek Road triangle pit and it will show up. My apologies for not initially providing this. Thank you.

Yes i was blown away by the Google image of trash!! I was showing a Co worker where the place was yesterday and saw that. Hopefully if we come together we can change that. Maybe we can send Google a new image.

I selected the option to report that image to google as it does not help depict the area

Thank you MADrtcw. I went up to the forest yesterday and cleaned a shooting area up past the rock quarry. We made it look very nice. We filled about 8, 30 gallon trash bags. I will post some before and after pictures later. Now we need to get everyone on board for the triangle pit. We need much more man power for a area that large.

As much as I don't like it. I think one of the easiest ways to keep things clean in the shooting areas is to ban shotgun shooting. Majority of the mess at all the shooting areas, are thousands of shotgun shells.

Yeah, but . . . if you apply that logic, then where do you stop?

After you ban shotgun shooting, then where is the majority of the trash coming from? Rifles? Do they get banned next?

We need to keep the shooting areas open. I think education is the only way.

We have to be careful with the word, BAN. Because let's say they do ban shotgun shells because that's the majority. Now, the shotgun shells are gone and steel case rifle shells are the majority, so lets ban those... Slippery slope.

What we need is more ambassadors to the shooting sports who can help educate shooters to pack-in-pack-out. It's amazing how moods change when you walk up to a group of people and hand them a bag.

I agree. I don't like the idea of getting rid of anything. That's why me and my pregnant wife went up on our day off and made the place look nice. It just seems most of the shooting neglect comes from shotgun shooters just leaving their shells. Most people pick up rifle and pistol brass and the shotgun shells are just left. But with that being said, we also cleaned things like blankets, printers, laptops, water heaters, and other crap. So I understand getting rid of shotgun shooting isn't the complete answer. But I can say that what took 95% of our cleaning time was picking up empty shotgun shells. I have some really good ideas to bring up at the meeting that doesn't involve banning anything. But we will see what happens.

To make it more simple. What would have took maybe an hour, took 3 and a half hours just because of the shotgun shells.

Actually, you would be suprised on how many people do NOT pick up their rifle and pistol brass. The re-loaders and scavengers do, every night. There are people who almost make a LIVING doing nothing but picking up brass and scrap metal from shooting pits.
