Supposed to be a good Elk year this year. Numbers are up, or so says biologists. While haven't researched deer, would venture to say it's the same. But haven't hunted that area in many years, been around it quite a bit riding many many miles, this year even. High buck hunts are hard, just hard. Especially this year with water resources as brush used for a portion of water is bone dry. Find an active stream or year round pond and stay within a mile of it, preferably high outlook. Chelan/Okanogan has some downright beautiful areas and is fully worth the time just to be there. Get a street licensed atv/orv, there's miles of land to explore. East side has more areas open for orv use than wet side. Hell, even a dual sport bike. Part of the problem there is the number of west side hunters that go there to get away from the thick brush and rain from the west side. A hillside will look like a pumpkin patch in modern season. I'll be up around Blewett with my bike, one should see what a yuppie bike looks like with gear an guns strapped on, filthy as hell running single track. The old timers are even amazed.
If your asking for reason of target shooting........... I say don't. Seasons are in full swing right now, but that's me. My practice and target shooting in the woods ends the day before archery deer, on either side of the hill. While modern season let's one reach out so some disturbance still works, archers and muzzle loaders need close and personal, add on camo'd up to blend with environment, and target shooting is bound to make someone butt hurt.

Good glass and a lunch will be your friend. Find a high point and glass, and keep glassing. High hunts have limited number of animals and trasping around will just spook them, especially if cover is minimal. Locate and move using hills and whatever else you can find for cover, while second guessing their movement. Those kind of hunts can be fun as you use more skill than blind luck. You get one done in warm weather, get it out quick. De-bone if needed, or slice meat to the bone to help cool. Early spring hunts are generally warm.

I'm coming prepared for camping out for two days, but I won't be going for another week. It's currently 48 degrees in The Pass so I'm expecting that it will still be cool.

Stevens rec area is a low of 36 tonight. If you're in the mountains expect it to be 3 degrees cooler for every 1000 feet of elevation gain. Pack the warm skivvies.

Should be a balmy 30 by the time I get there. Maybe the bear fur will have fluffed out a bit and if I don't see a deer, I'll take a bear and make a hoodie.
