Well, our two days of fun in Chelan are over and we're back at home.
Here's a layout of the range, showing the location of the various steel targets. It should be pretty easy to find them with this, right? Well . . . not so much . . . some of them were lying on the ground, and some were just damned near invisible. BadKarma and FMJ 911 hoofed it out there on Thursday morning with some spray paint, and marked most of them so we could see them better.
On Thursday, we weren't able to find the 900- and 1000-yard targets until one of the club officers showed up and was able to find them with the telescope (thanks, Larry!). On Friday morning, BadKarma, FMJ 911 and I hiked out to the targets, repainted, hung up more of those that were on the ground, and gave them all liberal doses of pink and orange tape and ribbons. No, we didn't leave it cleaner than we found it . . . but we left it better than we found it.
Here's the view from about 550 yards, which is about as far as BK's truck could make it:
After much hiking and sweating, here are FMJ 911 and BadKarma fixing up the 1000-yard target:
Here's the view back to the firing line from the 1000-yard target. Yeah, it looks pretty flat . . . but it's NOT. Check out the photo above for some perspective.
Once the targets were all purtied up, we started to beat them down again. Here's oldkim dual-wielding the telescopes, with FMJ 911 on the Mosin 91/30 and root on the sniper Mosin 91/30 in the background, both trying to ring that 1000-yard gong:
Ol' FMJ looks pretty Russian behind that thing, doesn't he?
Good times.
My observations:
- We did pretty damned well for a bunch of rookies shooting at least 700 yards longer than most of us had ever tried, mostly with guns older than our parents. All of the Mosins rang the 1000-yard target at least once, and the metal target at 644 yards didn't pose too much of a challenge. - The rear sight for the 1903A3 doesn't adjust to anything longer than 800 yards. - Setting the rear sight of a Mosin at the 900-meter mark is just the ticket for 1000-yard shooting. It actually worked! - My .308 Remington 700 performed very well . . . I'm very happy with it. - I'm considering taking a very early retirement and moving to Chelan. - We had a really good group of guys. Thanks, gents!
