The lessons learned.

A Mosin Nagant will reach out to 1,000 yards. With my 91/30 (made in 1931) and M44 (made in 1944) with iron sights.

These are not custom, these are off the shelf, no adjustments made to them. No special front blade or alteration to sights. No scopes.

The ammo were surplus, not the special sniper ammo. Made in 1960's and 1970's.

I shot on the bench using my support arm (600 yards) and later switched to using a sandbag (1,000 yards).


We did have a sniper version and it of course was even better.

I'm not saying it'll do 6" groups at 1,000 but it will definitely hit area targets. (area targets are a squad of troops)

I'm very pleased with these $99 specials (Shipped to me at home - C&R FFL 03!)
Okay I paid a bit more on the M44 but hell for under $250... shooting 1,000 yards

I've never understood the anti-Mosin crowd.
You get the pleasure of hearing the sound of the hit well after the rifle report has died away... There's a special pleasure in that.

They go "bang" for a long time reliably.

Lessons:

Handloaded .38 Special is darn good ammo especially in a Rifle! (3.5 grains IMR 700x, 158 Grain PLated FP Bullet, Remington 1-1/2 Small Pistol Primer)

.22 Magnum is Expensive, but very fun to shoot!

Scope Kiss on a .300 Win Mag is not fun, but Hitting 800 yard targets outweighs the pain by far!

And Finally, Just getting to hang around some good people and take potshots at far out metal is awesome.

I have a Bushnell 4200 Elite 8-32 scope with a very close eye relief. I have never had an issue but I gave Robert and Steve as many shots as they wanted. Steve lasted 4 but Robert took it like a man for 20+. Both got a kiss or 2 on the snouse. Nothing major. It kicks like a tranny giving you a blow job while trying to steel your wallet in the front seat of a jeep.

Well, let's just say I don't have those marks.

Not because I know better... I would certainly say I do not.

I'm just not one to shoot too many folks rifles. I've never liked shooting scoped rifles.

Feels like cheating... Plus knowing that the ammo is like $2 per shot is something I'm not fond of...

Looking back I took about 1,200 rounds of 7.62 x 54R and came home with 900.

Shooting about 300 rounds was about $60 ($0.20 per round).

Well, my nose still has a spot but it's not gory enough to merit a photo at this point. And as you know, I only post photos of my body parts if there is significant gore involved.

I didn't get hit by the scope itself per se, but the damned little red thing on the Butler Creek cover. It looked a lot like this one:



The bottom line is that the rifle and the scope are just fine . . . the problem was me. I was kind of sloppy and loose in the way I was holding the gun, and I got exactly what I deserved.
