Against my advice my buddys just had to shoot at the lower pit and this was the result. It did not seam like a ricoche but who knows. I was standing 10ft away when this happend. We took cover and I told everyone to pack it up and we split. Unless they close the upper pit or make a major bearm in front of it.........Never again

I'm glad you and your friends are ok. What does the ammo box look like on the inside?

Is the upper pit slightly SE of the lower pit on the map? On NF7220?
The lower pit looked like it had a good backstop when I drove by the other week. Is the safety issue people shooting from the upper pit and not much of a backstop?
Is the upper pit backstop/location really safer for everyone if it creates a ricochet hazard in the lower pit?

Howdy Howdy
I have shot many times along the FS 70 series of "pits". There are many areas along that valley where people shoot. Some are much safer then others. The biggest / most popular is after the yellow gate. It is a true rock quarry. It has signs about safe shooting, and big ecology blocks and a beat up gate. I don't shoot there due to the unusually high amounts of ricochets off the boulders and rocks and the line of fire from the pit above. If a person takes a sharp right just after the largest gravel pit, heading up hill, then there is another spot in another gravel pit, that is more like a gravel storage for crushed rock. from where people shoot in this upper pit, the line of fire is directly in line with the lower gravel pit/quarry that you pass on the way up to the next.
there is another small pit on the west side of the road that is obviously now closed that has a horrible backstop, and the road is on the other side of the backstop, shut down for obvious reasons. it is on a corner on the left as you head uphill to the largest pit/quarry.
There is another shooting spot before you reach the main yellow snow sports gate, that is a clear cut, with good dirt backstop. It is very near the greenwater river where the road forks to the right off the main 70. It also has a safe shooting sign. This spot doesn't have a ricochet problem, nor does it have a line of fire problem from other pits. It's not very long range though. anything from 20 yards to maybe 100 yards. At busy times, it does have an issues with firing line, and setting up targets because it is very wide. Getting everyone on the same schedule for a cold range is a PITA.
If all else fails, or is too busy, then I go further up "the road" to my "secret" spots. I think the snowline is gonna give me issues soon though.
I'd like to hangout sometime with some other waguns folks for some shooting in this area. There are many safe shooting spots. Send me a pm if you wanna shoot in the mts. with other safe shooters.
safe shooting, Brian

Hello folks
Just heard that the lowest shooting spot has been said to be private property, and off limits even though it has a sign saying shoot safely right in front of it. This would be the clearcut area with the dirt hillside backstop. Just passing the word. Safe shooting, Brian
