I'm looking for 1 to 2 people to join me on a tour of these 3 pits with the DNR Rec Manager for Elbe Hills and Tahoma on June 4th. We're discussing potential improvements to these sites and I'd like to include someone from the area who is interested in giving some input and help in our joint efforts to save these places. Excavating experience or background is a plus, as we will be considering what it would take to shape good shooting lanes.

Elbe Hills, Stoner Pit

Elbe Hills, Scott Turner Pit

Tahoma, Lake Creek Pit

If you are local (within an hour?) and would like to get involved, and would be available on Friday morning 9 AM on June 4th, post up a note. We just might have something good here. We'll know better on the 4th.

Thank you,
Bill

Im local to both Elbe pits. 20minutes from either one.

I know the woods and excavation equipment. I have put in plenty of hours in the past at Elbe Hills working rocks and logs.

As per the Stoner Rd pit, I can offer perspective from an ORV user and a shooter.

Is Nancy still the DNR person for this area? I thought she had been replaced but I still see her in the area from time to time.

I don't know if Nancy is still with this regional office or not, but the Rec Manager, for Elbe Hills & Tahoma SF is Joe Chavez. I knew him when he was a forester in the Yacolt Burn State Forest.

It would be great to have you at our meeting, Old Growth! Let me know if it will work out.

Thanks,
Bill

I have hauled many truckloads of garbage out of the Stoner road pit. Spent many hours working with Nancy. Do they want to enlarge the areas?

Not sure about enlarging anything, or what kind of improvements he's thinking, but we'll get a much better handle on it when we meet on the 4th.

If you can join us, we'll find out what's up.

Bill

This is the main Stoner road pit. It was busy before noon. Other shooters went down the road to the ORV trail system and were shooting. The pit closer to Scott Turner road is pretty small, only room for a few people.

In my opinion the dirt piles need to be moved to the back tree line, that would make this a better place to shoot.

Looks like an all around good place to shoot!

I'm sure the ORV people don't like shooting going on in their area, and that's probably why DNR would like us to attract people to these other places. Fewer conflicts are better!

Thanks for the pic! But honestly, I expected to see people laying around, stoned out of their mind! Isn't that how the pit got it's name? Ha!

I would guess that it is named after a land owner in the area.

That makes sense. I guess I'm still living in the 70's!
