I think I recently saw a couple of import , slightly worn Brownings during a transfer at either South Sound Guns in Lacey or Countyline in Yelm. This was a couple weekends ago. I'd guess SSG had them. Sadly my memory is somewhat democratic and not to be trusted.

I made a couple of phone calls today...

One was to the shop who’s selling the surplus Hi-Powers that I was looking at. They also sell refinished ones for $700 so I wanted to find out about what they refinish. They said they take them apart, clean them, Duracoat them, reassemble, then function test them. There’s no warranty on the refinishing since they’re surplus guns. Which kind of makes sense. But since they’re not replacing any parts and these surplus guns have a lot of mileage, I’d be suspect of the long term reliability.

The next call was to Robar, which is a large gunsmithing outfit. The guy I talked to said that I’d be looking at about $500 for coating and a trigger job. Plus any metal work that it needs to correct any big dings or installing upgraded sights. For the $1000 I’d have into building from a surplus gun, I could get a decent Hi-Power from Gunbroker.

The Robar guy went on to recommend the Tisas. He said they’re a really great quality clone. He was suspect of them at first but after working on some, he found that they’re a great budget option. I could get one of those and have a trigger job done on it for about the price of a refinished surplus Browning. And I’d be starting with a new gun instead of a potential basket case.
