So I've been doing a lot of camping and hiking with the family lately. At camp I carry IWB my xds in 9mm. Works great easy to move around with as it isn't as bulky. I'm not drawing unwanted attention from people either. When hiking I switch to my XDM in 9mm since it has a higher capacity of we run across any 4 legged issues. However, I grew up in Alaska and most people pack a higher caliber round when in the woods there. I have a Ruger Blackhawk in .357 mag, but the gun is heavy and much longer than my semi autos. I only have an OWB holster for this, and I don't like how it sits. Love the gun though.
So I have a few lines of thought: Get a better holster for the Blackhawk, maybe shoulder rig. Get a shorter revolver in .357 or larger caliber. Get a semi auto in a larger caliber such as .45 or ? Quit over thinking it and keep doing what I'm doing, higher capacity means more shots in a potential animal issue. Or other suggestions?
What do you pack in the woods when you go? I want to avoid sprays you are at the mercy of the wind, and with little kids and a dog I don't want want to deal with overspray issues.

http://bravo34.com/Home_Page.htmlI carry a gun (usually 9mm) for two legged creatures, and bear spray for four legged creatures.

I vote “quit overthinking it.”
Alaska is a different world, with fewer people and more/larger critters. Around here, I think the people are your biggest threat, and it sounds like you’re already well-equipped to deal with those.

Get an xdm in 460 Rowland, Glock in 10mm, or a Smith and Wesson model 69.

I you want to stay with an auto, I suggest a 10mm. You can have a high capacity magazine, and more knock down than a 357mag. I have run into bears a few times, just black bears but grizzlies are moving south on the cascades. Personally I would not carry anything in the woods that is not capable and legal for hunting large game. Remember that bears and mountain lions are tough creatures. Even with a 357 unless you are using solid bullets you probably will not penetrate deep enough to shut down the nervous system. Any revolver that is acceptable for me starts with a 4,,,,,,,,,41mag, 44mag, and 454cassul are my go to woods guns. Yes they are heavy but worth it. Kind of like the fact that I drove my children around in a 3/4 ton Suburban, Safety and survivability. There are good things to be said about both revolvers and auto's. Each must choose for their selves.....

Much better looking than the S&W "spike" posted above. That S&W looks like a tapered ream out of my toolbox. While its a nice gun, I just cant get over how butt fugly it is. Although just busting it out may disgust the bear or robber into leaving!

At least the sling on the sw500 solves his holster dilemma.
