Spent a stormy Sunday morning ringing steel at 100 yards with my 9 year old. Purple 22's for the win. Barely visible to the left of the rectangle target is our 3 steel plates.

Great job Tannerdog! Looks like you had the place to yourselves too. My son and i went up to RFGC to zero a couple AR's. we didn't have the place to ourselves. Son didn't care for his scope reticle so i mounted another i had when i got home. Now we need another range trip to zero again.

Thanks for the kudos guys. The range was actually pretty active Sunday morning, but many of the shooters were hanging back and watching the excitement of each shot from a 9 year old. Thanks to WAJIM (PIF'd some steel targets), my kids absolutely love shooting with me. They get bored with paper, but the steel makes noise signifying a hit. And I challenge them to shoot further. When I started my membership years ago at the range, I thought distance shooting with 22lr was an artillery skill. I now have 2 rifles that shoot MOA or better at 100 and several more that consistently hit my steel targets depending on ammo. The favorite for my daughters suppressed 22 is CCI standard velocity. The MOA guns shoot SK long range match and CCI standard.
When it is time to step up from .22, the kids already have AR's, PCC's, and bolt action rifles (.243) but will let them decide when they are ready for that.
One more thing... to brag a little. I let my daughter go to the rack and bring her rifle up to the bench on her own. She displays better muzzle discipline than a lot of adults.

It was the old guys telling me about silhouette shooting that changed my thinking. Standard velocity 22lr stays stable at distance, more so than high velocity anyways. The Kimber 82 and the Christianson Arms Ranger from the bench yields amazing accuracy. My daughters home built 10/22 has a Beyer standard contour barrel and probably holds 2-3 MOA. 100 yard accuracy is attainable and is fun as hell. I shoot from a bench though... with a scope. There are guys that do this off hand with peep sights... Very amazing. Oh, and one more fun thing. To challenge myself... I shot my Ruger Mk3, 6" barrel and a Leupold Delta point from a sand bag rest with a 12" hold over at 100 yards and hit a 10" plate 5 out of 10 shots, 4 of those in a row. No reason to do this, but left the range with a big smile on my face.

Same concept as super long range shooting, just in reverse. In long range shooting, you want the bullet to stay supersonic as long as possible, since the transition to subsonic destabilizes the round. With .22, you can't get enough speed and the round isn't designed to go very far while supersonic, so you often get better results starting off subsonic at the muzzle. If there's no transition to subsonic speeds, there's no trans-sonic destabilization. If you go looking, you'll note that a lot of the competition-grade .22 is subsonic, like a lot of Eley's offerings..
