At the request of two WAGuns members and the approval of a WAGuns admin, I am transplanting the bulk of the posts from the same thread on SGN. Posts by others than myself will be excluded or the identifiers removed. Comments, and particularly G-porn postings are encouraged. I ask that all postings be civil and focused on the Garand and related platforms. sSeems some of you guys are bad boyz.

Number one question - who has the best chamber and throat erosion measurement tool for the money ?

And, who carries it for a decent price ?

Lastly, what took you so long ?

Been waiting, and drooling in anticipation.

I'll even torture myself posting pictures of some of my stuff.

Whoops, 'nother question - any room here for the Garand's stepchild, the M1 A ?

From xyz:
The Garand is one rifle I hope to own one day, either in full size or Tanker T-26 size, how could you not like a semi-auto battle rifle chambered in .30-06.
I know I can read tons of info. about the Tanker Garand that can be found on the internet, but I'm curious to hear your opinion on the Tanker Garand, corpsman, if you would take a moment please...

First, the so called Tanker was never produced for the military beyond some experiments. There are inherent functional limitations, particularly a severe loss of effective range. The standard Garand barrel is 24", so chopping off a third of the barrel is bound to have that effect. On the other side, they make nasty close in defense weapons. A rural house would be well served with a tanker. They make handy thick woods and brush deer rifles. With the 152 grain M2 AP round, they can raise hell with engine blocks and gas tanks. Many of the early attempts had severe reliability issues, which cast a pall on attempts to market later functional versions. So, some are great (check with Everett Bill) and some suck. I have the subjective impression that any tanker conversion designed with a bent gas tube should be regarded with suspicion. A more cheerful note. Guy name of Tim Shufflin of http://shuffsparkerizing.com/ produces some excellent conversions at a reasonable price considering the product. The web site, in and of itself, is a pleasure to survey and a reflection of his attention to QA. He is the designer and producer of a serious tanker type he calls the Mini-G. Available in .308 and 30-06, with or without a conversion to M14 mag feed in .308. If, in my hottest wet dream, open carry of battle rifles was more socially acceptable, a Mini-G would be my choice in urban/suburban settings. I would stick with em-bloc clip feed as the lack of a protruding magazine makes the platform handier and the use of the hasty sling more effective. Or in my truck. Yeah. http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature...&v=XlYJacucucQ

This ancient training film provides excellent information on how to shoot the M14 to Marine Corps standards. Almost all of the material applies to the Garand. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HNSuh4MdqmY

Thanks for all the input Corpsman and Everett Bill. For whatever reason the Tanker has always caught my eye. I've seen Tankers with 20 inch barrels (in addition to the shorter lengths) and that's probably the length I'd choose. I've been a fan of the M1A, BM-59, Tanker Garand, and Garands for a long time but never bought any of the above and I'm going to have to change that situation sooner or later. The high capacity of an M1A would be nice but I really like the lines of the Tanker, I also like the fact that the Garand is combat veteran if you buy an original. I believe I could be happy with a standard Garand, but the Tanker is my first choice, at least for now. I've read about all the reliability issues associated with bad examples, which is why I have considered a Springfield Armory example, but then again it would be cooler to have one built on a receiver and parts of a WWII rifle, and then again it would be a shame to alter an original WWII rifle... At some point I hope to end up with a Garand! Thanks again for the info.

^^ Yeah I know, of all people I should agree because I too hate when people fix things that ain't broke, but that Tanker Garand sure is a nice version of the Garand, it's what got me wanting a Garand in the first place. Maybe I should just buy a Beretta BM-59 or Springfield Armory M1A Scout rifle and call it good, but I like the .30-06 round too! The rifle won't have a box mag, except for a 18 or 20 inch barrel, it'll be a Garand. On the other hand, if I can ever convince a buddy to sell me his standard Garand that was built to National Match standards, I think I'd be grinnin' from ear to ear...
