The upper HG scope mount sounds like a good alternative for left eye dominant, as well as modern glass use. I have never seen one myself.

Amega website for Garand.
http://amegamounts.com/product_pages/m1garand.php

Ultimak site
http://www.ultimak.com/M12.htm

My #1 Garand has a Douglas medium barrel which is to big to accept
either brand of mount. Saw the same effect with a MiA Loaded model
when considering mounting a Springfield barrel mount. Works fine with
a standard M1A. Sigh.

Sold the rifle.
No issues with the mount at all, it went with the rifle.

This is the SAI scout scope mount. Wonder if it works on a Garand.
It would require cutting out an opening in the upper hand guard.

This a similar mount for the M1A made by GG&G.

If I had to replace a Garand barrel I would consider going 7.62X51.
Any observations from someone who has experience with a 308 Garand?
Only experience I have had was decades ago with one of the 70,000
Navy conversions, that being to limited to have an opinion.

I had one with the chamber insert. Ran and shot great, never had a problem with it. Back then i could buy 7.62x51 SA Battlepacks for 10 bucks. I put a lot of rounds through it before i finally sold it.
I don't remember the company that did the insert and new Wood, but it was well done. That was the 1st Garand my oldest daughter fired, i still have the Target hanging in my Garage.

Have been told the insert barrel models were eliminated
from the Navy TO&E soon after being issued. Replaced with .
.308 barrel models. Have about a half dozen South African
140 round battle packs. Current price range?

It was not a Navy insert rifle, it was done on the commercial market in a Standard Garand. Those rounds are probably .70 each these days...

If I recall correctly, you are a Marine Scout Sniper. Grandfather
was a Marine M1903 instructor at Galveston, WW One. Made
sergeant 3 times.
