Same old wives tales. Someone brings up the thumb thing and the
PING thing every time there is a convo about Garands. The PING
thing is unlikely to draw attention in a fire fight. The thumb thing,
in so far as loading is concerned, appears to be impossible. I have
tried to deliberately induce the thumb while loading. No can do.
Simple physics. No two objects can occupy the same space simultaneously.
The velocity and shape of a chambering cartridge kicks the thumb
out of the way. No space to insert the thumb in front of the bolt with
a loaded clip locked down. All bolt on thumb injuries I have seen were
caused by not paying attention while inserting digits into an open action...
not clips.

Did you watch the video? I was agreeing with you and it shows how it's not possible when loading a Clip.

That was my impression as well, although it might be argued that the video makes a suggestion but is not proof. Whatever.

Am I missing something? It just proves your point.

So is it really that simple, just keep pressure on the top round until you’re ready to pull your hand out?

No “blading” your palm along the side or any of that is needed?

Yup, that simple. Like Corpsman said, you only get Garand thumb by depressing the follower when the bolt is locked back and the rifle is unloaded.

Yup. That does not mean one can not use the hand blade approach, just that that is unnecessary and significantly slower. One of the major advantages of the Garand is that it can be reloaded from the pouch to a chambered round in 2 seconds. This means a steady one round every one to three seconds of aimed suppressive fire with little or no perceivable interruption of rate of fire due to reloading. That can not be done with a detachable magazine platform. Review the impact of the Garand during human wave attacks by North Korean and Chinese troops armed with AK's and SKS's. Literally means more hits with fewer rounds and more targets taken down PER ROUND due to the penetration obtainable with the 30-06. If your thumb should slip off the top round after locking in the clip, the bolt will knock your thumb out of the way. Now, it takes a fair amount of practice to attain fast reloading, but well worth the effort to exploit this advantage. I use two clips loaded with dummy rounds.
