Following is a reply to an IM regarding gas valves. "Schuster is the most versatile in terms of range of loads. The Garand Gear is fixed but works fine within typical load ranges. Have Schusters on all my Garands and M1A's except one, which has a Fowler adjustable valve that has not been in production for 15 years. I chose Schuster against the day when mil-spec loads become hard to get. So far that does not appear to be happening as several ammo manufacturers are producing ammo that matches mil-spec. I favor conversion to 7.62x51 when barrels are worn out." As for Garand maintenance, the level of attention required is about the same as most semi-auto rifles. The last government contract production of Garands took place in Italy by Breda and Beretta in the early 60's. Episodically, several companies have manufactured new, or mostly new, Garands over the years, and several are doing so now. albeit in small numbers. I think it likely more such production will occur when the CMP Garand sources are exhausted. I firmly believe that the Garand is the best battle rifle ever made and remains wholly viable for contemporary combat. The why of that is well covered in previous posts in this and the SGN thread. And yes, the M14 is an improvement in some respects but not in others. The one reason I would not convert a Garand to external magazine feed is the superior suppressive fire capability afforded by the en bloc clip. The Garand is very capable at range and proved very effective against human wave attacks due to the penetrating power of the 30-06 and the very fast reloading of the platform. Finally, there are numerous old Army training videos that do a good job of explaining the Garand manual of arms, mostly on YouTube. For now anyway. Recommend finding and downloading said videos whilst they remain easy to find. https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=M1+Garand+training+films

Picked this up today at a shop in Bellingham. 800 plus tax. For everything. Bore is dirty and crappy, may be pitted, but will see.

It's not too expensive to get a new barrel if this one is worn out. You just have to find someone that knows how to do the finish reaming on barrel installation.

If the barrel is worn, now is a good time to consider conversion to 7.62x51.

M-1 By R. Gannon
Do you wonder why that rifle Is hanging in my den? You know I rarely take it down, But I touch it now and then.
It's rather slow and heavy By standards of today, But not too many years ago It swept the rest away.
It's held its own in battles Through snow, or rain, or sun And I had one just like it, This treasured old M1.
It went ashore at Bougainville In nineteen forty-three. It stormed the beach at Tarawa Through a bullet-riddled sea.
Saipan knew its strident bark, Kwajelein, its sting. The rocky caves of Peleliu Resounded with its ring.
It climbed the hill on Iwo With men who wouldn't stop And left our nation's banner Flying on the top.
It poked its nose in Pusan, Screamed an angry roar And took the First Division From Chosin Reservoir.
Well, time moves on And things improve With rifles and with men. And that is why the two of us Are sitting in my den.
But sometimes on a winter night, While thinking of my Corps, I know that if the bugle blew We'd be a team once more.
