I was planning a backpacking trip in Yukon Territory over the summer, thinking about bringing a shotgun in case of bears or other wild animals. The shotgun in question is pump action, so it isn’t a restricted firearm in Canada. However I have heard self defense laws are iffy in Canada (though not sure what self defense laws against animals are like) so I’m not sure if my reason would satisfy border security. I also read I would need to fill out a form and pay a fee, but I was unclear to me if I’m supposed to fill out the paperwork beforehand and bring it to the border or fill it out at the border. If anyone has experience with taking guns into Canada I’d really like to hear what you think. I just really don’t want my gun getting seized at the border.
