Anyone have any experience with Vortex optics? I’m a complete noob when it comes to rifle scopes. Sportsman’s is running a deal on Vortex thought the end of July and I have some extra store credit, so figured I’d go through them for my purchase.
What do you recommend for a first hunting/range scope? 3x9, 4x12, 6x24? FFP sounds ideal, but is it really more effective than SFP?
This will be mounted on a Tikka 308 superlite. I like to think I’d eventually work my way up to 1000yds, but realistically will be shooting at 400yds or less.
They have a great warranty, and the quality is good enough for most shooters/applications. I have a couple of their LVPO scopes and am happy with them, although I've never really stretched them out far. If you're going out to 400 yds, the 16x magnification will be nice. My 6.5 Creedmoor has a scope that goes up to 21x, and even that makes small targets hard to see past 400.

Just bought my 5th or 6th Vortex this week. I also have a Tikka T3X Superlite, although mine is in 300wm. I have a Viper 6-24x50 PST on it. Great for that rifle. 6x can be a bit much for up close shkts, but having the 24x at range has been a life saver. For the .308 I'd look at a 3x variable. Probably the 4-16x.

I don't think you'll hear much bad about Vortex. They are known for great scopes, and even better customer service.
I'm not saying that they are always the right answer, because there are a lot of good companies and scopes out there. But you'll rarely hear anyone say, "Don't buy a Vortex."

I 100% agree with Madpick. Great glass, especially for the price and great customer service.

I’m not really much of a Vortex fan, but I do have a Razor HD LH 2-10x40 HSR-4 on my main hunting rifle. Absolutely love the optic and reticle. Got it on clearance for $300 off a couple years ago. I wouldn’t hesitate to buy another one (even at full price).

Yes, I love Vortex...Yes, I had to use their VIP warranty (see pictures below)...and Yes, Vortex came through for me!!
Many moons ago, in a galaxy far, far away, I purchased a Vortex SPARC II as a birthday gift for my roommate. The mailman/woman left the package on my front porch. My Alaskan Malamute, decided to go "Office Space" on the package...I took pictures of the crime scene and mailed Vortex the remains. Within 3 to 5 days, I had a brand new SPARC II.

I have one vortex viper and love it, there there are things to be aware of. On the SFP scopes the ranging reticals usually work at zoom that's less then max. So on my 6-24 the retinal only works on 18x (I think). At 24x the viper gets fairly hazy. It's enough that it's almost not worth it to me. Upper end models like the razor are probably good to go.
Now I will say that your asking the scope to do two different things hunting and 1k yards. Personally I'd do the 3-9 or 4-12 for hunting to keep the weight down. For the 1k yard I'd get the 24x.
