For what reason do you believe they put a folding stock on it?

There has to be a reason

Another perspective on it from SSD:

USSOCOM Completes Safety Certification and Purchase of SIG SAUER MG 338 Machine Guns, Ammunition, and Next Generation Suppressors

Great picture for scale:

Quote:
The SIG MG 338 bridges the gap between the current machine guns currently in use with the U.S. Military. In comparison to the current M240 (7.62x51cal) machine gun, which has been in service with the U.S. Military for 60 years, the SIG MG 338, is noticeably lighter, weighing only 20 pounds, and provides significantly more range and lethality. In comparison to the M2 (.50cal), which has been in service with the U.S. Military for 110 years, the MG 338 is approximately one-quarter the weight, and in a historic first, offers a man-portable solution with similar effective-range. Making this system even more desirable are the new SIG SAUER Next Generation Suppressors which drastically reduces the impact of harmful toxic fumes and signature, making the operator less vulnerable.

The SIG SAUER MG 338 machine gun is a belt-fed, lightweight medium machine gun weighing under 20lbs., chambered in 338 Norma Mag. The MG 338 features a short-stroke gas piston system and a proprietary recoil mitigation system, with a free-floating, quick-change barrel, ambidextrous controls, switchable feed tray, charging handle that can be alternated to either side depending on operator preference, and as a modern, multi-caliber, modular system the new SIG MG 338 is easily convertible to 7.62x51cal.

Just because you found a midget holding the new machinegun does not change anything!

It does look massive in their tiny hands, but I don't think they would have a problem bailing out of a Bradley with it. :thumbsup2:

In fact, I think you could actually fit six soldiers that size in a Bradley as advertised!

This is for RocketScott.

I hate flat dark earth! It would be much better if it was black as firearms are supposed to be. It has a folding stock that may or may not (probably not) be useful.

No I don't think so. I have done several "Who else is disappointed with" postings.

Totally fair. If they want other colors that's why rust-oleum was invented. How else are the grunts going to release their inner Bob Ross

I do not see a beefed up general purpose machinegun replacing the 7.62 GPM and M2 .50 caliber machinegun.

Well I’m sitting in North Carolina getting ready to go play in the sand box!

As for this bad boy, the whole point of it was to counter the whole overmatch that the bad guys supposedly have over us with the PK and PKP machine guns. How well this will actually work is still to be seen. The XM-25 was supposedly a good idea yet in practice turned into a waste of time and money and was eventually dumped.

How exactly this system is supposed to be used I’m not sure. Given that the whole overmatch typically becomes an issue when you’re shooting from mountain top to mountain top it’ll probably be in some kind of static position. Weight wise it’s similar to the 240 so I could see them carrying this turkey, however the belts of ammo will be a bitch. The size of the thing could also be an impediment but I doubt that’ll be an issue. As for the folding stock, I’m sure it comes down to “it’s 2020, it has to have a folding stock”. My only reasoning would space savings. If you’re crawling into a turret a stock can be in the way at times, if you fold it when not actively in use that could be beneficial.

Instead of a folding stock, removing the barrel would make it more portable.
