I know these have a big name, charity, world wide work and such, but I never see these as versatile as the katadyn or Sawyer filters since you need to stay next to the water source to filter and drink it.

Not quite, just fill up some water bottles/containers. Then when you want to drink just take the cap off and put your straw in.
