From what I've seen the consensus is the departure deeper into the arctic is due to rising water temperature in the Bering Sea. Something like a decline from 8 billion in 2018 to 1 billion in 2021, and another 40% loss since. They require below 2c average temps and that region has risen 4x faster that of the rest of the planet in that time.

I know there’s at least one fishing/crabbing vessel prowling around out here that doesn’t show up on the tracking stuff, so it’s probably either Chinese or Russian.
