EDIT: NWS is saying buoys are only detecting a small wave, and any waves expecting to hit are gonna be less than a foot.

the level of tsunami danger is being evaluated. Further

The '64 earthquake was 9.2.... and the following Tsunamis killed 4 at Newport Beach, Oregon and 12 at Crescent City, California - about 10% of the fatalities, and didn't even happen in AK.

But, the Richter scale is logarithmic, so this earthquake is about 30x less powerful.

I remember being a kid growing up in Seaside Oregon and having Tsunami siren testing and one year there was actually an evacuation from a Tsunami alert.

A girlfriend and I were staying in Seaside for the summer with some family of hers, about 12 years ago? We'd gone up north for some shopping....and noticed first that there was no other traffic on the road as we pulled back into town. We could hear the sirens, but assumed it was just another test.

I remember the fear settling into my gut as we pulled up to the house, (2 blocks off the beach) and noticed a LOT all at once. No other cars in any surrounding driveways. Front door standing wide open with the tv blaring out into the front yard, and multiple helicopters swept overhead, going straight out to sea.

I remember standing in the front yard, thinking....this is it. Her family didn't even bother to call us before they evacuated.

I was quite disgusted that of all the things that had tried to kill me so far in life, what was gonna get me was a Sharknado.
