Tesla tried to force a customer to pay $4,500 ransom over 80 miles of range that the company software-locked in his battery pack. The automaker only started to walk back on the strategy to squeeze $4,500 out of its customers after an uproar on social media.

EXACLTY, why while I like EV I will not own a Tesla. They often do whatever they want and push changes on vehicles. Good and bad changes for sure, but the fact it is forced with no ability for owner to approve or not bothers me.

My X was a 60D originally and was supposed to come software unlocked and uncorked to a 75D when I took delivery. It wasn’t. I reached out to them after a week and they were like, “wut?? That costs $3k”. I promptly replied with the photos and description from their inventory site as well as the text messages with my sales advisor and 4 hours later, my X was a 75D via a software push.
I’m positive this is going to happen again with the new battery packs.
I got the Volkswagen ID.4 electric car last year and so far the only "service" with payments are: * the navigation with traffic and shit. I got a couple of years free after that android auto / google maps * the voice command system. My accent don't work with any of those. Also android auto provides the same except the button in the steering wheel. * optional wifi hotspot in the car with verizon. nah * Something something safe. VW version of chevy start. Press a button to get emergency help. * Remote access. The internet thing so you can control a couple of things from your smartphone. Not even remotely comprehensive as the tesla app.
All of those services require them maintaining servers/people/network/data to run them. So it makes sense they charge recurrent fees.
So if you want to avoid the tesla bullshit at least you have some alternatives in the EV space. Sure, Teslas are superior in every way to a VW ID.4 because they're in different segments. Teslas are luxury cars. ID4 is designed to compete with Honda CRV or the like.

As a software engineer I can confirm many software updates are not what you would consider updates. Most people think updates are about fixing problems or adding features. In fact, many updates are about removing features or functionality either because a patent agreement or rights usage has expired or companies won't play ball together and a feature needs to be disabled for legal reasons or because a company got popular and they want to start charging for a feature that used to be free.
If Teslas get more popular I'd expect more of their features that used to be free to start becoming paid service rentals or as they get more popular some of their software partners, vendors or even employees that retain creative ownership rights may try squeezing the company for money and when the company doesn't play ball they'll push "updates" to disable significant parts of the car's abilities. The "software as a service" business model is pretty much standard across all the big players now. I can't think of any major recent software that end users "own" anymore. I think the last big one was Office 2016.
This is why you never, ever software update old Sony bluray players that are also capable of playing media files from network drives or thumb drives, they got into a fight with Microsoft and others and now a ton of playback codecs are no longer legally available for them to use, so if you update those players then movie and audio files that used to work will suddenly stop working.
Internet connected devices are dangerous as fuck and not just from hackers, as demonstrated above sometimes the biggest danger is when the company "updates" you. And to do that to a car you depend on for transportation and that has safety implications is even dumber. I understand with cellphones you have no choice but with everything you can choose do NOT get "smart" appliances or tech.

Paid unlocks are a bunch of horse shit. I WAS looking into buying a Zero DSR. After reading through their warranty and realizing I have to pay more to unlock the bike's full potential, I chose not to buy anything from Zero. All of their bikes come preloaded with the features buyers think they're getting. The subscription horse shit started after 2020. The bikes that are 5 or more years old are selling for super cheap but are out of warranty. There is way too much risk buying an out of warranty EV. It's bad enough Zero doesn't stand by their own product and won't let independent shops or the owners do any work on the fucking things. You can't ride or expose them to rain water. The water may seep into the battery pack and brick the bike, and that is considered a void of warranty. It's so stupid! Energica bikes are pretty sweet but I'm not paying that much for a bike. Not even if it's Tom Cruise's Ducati. Their prices are insane. The upside is they'll send out parts to the owners or independent shops and include extremely detailed emails with pics on changing parts and doing other mods.

Fairy tales written 15 years ago that we are about to start recycling expired batteries from hybrids and electric vehicles, when ecoterrorists jerked off not on a Tesla yet, but on a Prius. And what is interesting, they said the same mantra, almost verbatim. They also told us about the wonderful technologies of super-capacious and super-fast batteries, which have already been created, and tomorrow they will be in all anal vibrators, oh, sorry, electric cars. Apparently, those batteries did not step over the level of anal vibrators. Instead of creating normal technologies, ecoterrorists from governments still hype for stupid things on batteries, and tell the new batch of tales about miracle batteries and their clean and fast disposal and recycling in a wonderful tomorrow, continuing to collect mountains of poisonous shit made from very valuable and irreplaceable raw materials, leaving that shit for the next generations.

That's why most EV companies are not recycling they are UPcycling. Tesla takes its aged packs and re-uses them in Powerwalls, Mega Packs and other energy storage solutions. Just because the battery can't perform to launch an EV to 60mph in 3 seconds doesn't mean it doesn't have the juice to power your entire house. They are also meticulously taking apart aged batteries that don't meet re-power QC where almost all of it is re-used.

It’s like making popcorn. Garage fire + tesla + ammo = a bad day.
Tesla(s) were outside, charging. Initial investigation leads to an electrical problem (probably related to the charging). We are going to see this more as people DIY outlet installs with undersized wire or use cheap 14-50 receptacles and then plug/unplug daily.
