Guess how many of these attacks (particularly against big financial groups) gets never reported.
This has been going on for years.

And the overall economic cost to the people of this country far exceeded the ransom.
I'll be happier when the people that do this crap are prosecuted.

The riots by BLM, and ANTIFA, for instance ARE terrorism.

What I'm curious about is how exactly bitcoins were "recovered" by "DOJ"... DOJ hacked somebody's e-wallet password? :) "Deputy FBI Director Paul Abbate said the bureau seized the money from a Bitcoin wallet" :) ? What? Blockchain anyone?
Or Putin made an offer to the DarkStar it couldn't refuse to talk their ransomware "client" into returning ransom? Gesture of a "good will" before the meeting with Biden? But Biden already sanctioned its own pipeline and removed sanctions from Putin's pipeline. So what next, in exchange?

The riots by BLM, and ANTIFA, for instance ARE terrorism. This is what I'd call a "cyberpiracy". And until the world starts treating this as piracy was treated on high seas in 19th century - nothing will change.

And by the way, the criminals for some reason left most of the bitcoin stateside, and the FBI only seized the wallet. They have no access to the bitcoin itself. So what is the point? The money is as good as still in the hands of the criminals.

Some speculation:
I heard today that the reason they got some of the money back so quickly is because the FBI was involved before the ransom was paid. Sounds a bit tinfoily to me
The other explanation seems more plausible: Bitcoin uses a block chain, which contains all the previous transactions made with it. It's like a serial number that's very, very long, and keeps getting longer. Even though bitcoin is decentralized it is traceable and once those bitcoins pop up somewhere else they can be reclaimed
It's a bit like trying to sell stolen artwork at a major auction house

It's a bit like trying to sell stolen artwork at a major auction house They claimed they recovered "coins" not money. Blockchain is "traceable" by definition - it is a distributed public "ledger" by design. To get coins you'd get to participate - perform a public transaction from the account that holds coins. How did "FBI" go about it? Waterboarding somebody in Russia? :) The ransomware specialists are not the ones that carry some cheap e-wallet app with "1234" password.... It is just plain weird to me and doesn't make much sense.... https://www.pymnts.com/news/security-an ... allet-hop/Quote: Bloomberg explained that the bitcoin “sits” in the wallet (a “hot” wallet that is still connected to the internet, versus a “cold” one that is not) that is held on an exchange, accessed by a private key. “Where exactly the bitcoins were held, and who gave the FBI the private key, hasn’t been disclosed,” noted the site. Duh. Just call Putin and ask nicely... :)

You want tin foil? (not that it won't end up being true) but some are guessing it has the duel purpose of discrediting bitcoin as a viable currency and perpetuating the useful Russian boogeyman narrative. https://www.zerohedge.com/markets/here- ... newsletter"Yet just a few hours later, the exact same ridiculous narrative meant to achieve just one thing - tarnish the reputation of bitcoin further to the point where the US has to ban it - has struck again, and according to the WSJ last week's big hack, that of food processing giant JBS, was also resolved when the company paid $11 million - in bitcoin of course, because in this day and age one can't simply dump a suitcase full of cash or send a wire transfer to an incognito account - as ransom to the criminals (who will naturally soon be unveiled as Russians because of course) responsible for the cyberattack that halted the company's operations." BTW: how come no one has mentioned the hack on the big content providers that shut down a lot of internet commerce last week?
