A new law in Washington could keep kids in booster seats until middle school

Quote:

(CNN)Next year, some middle school kids could be rolling up in the carpool line and hopping out of their booster seats.
That's after Washington state Gov. Jay Inslee signed stricter car seat regulations into law, meaning children under the age of 12 and shorter than 4 feet 9 inches must sit in a booster seat...

My Japanese teacher wondered if she would be required to use a booster seat when she drives.

This kid won't get picked on when he's dropped off for football practice.

This is soooo dumb. Outside of infants in baby carriers, all these "child seats" actually INCREASE the fatality rate of children. WTF.

Either she's driving illegally (under 16), or she hasn't read the bill on how it doesn't apply to her.

Notice that the NTSB advice ONLY makes mention of a single study in Philladelphia showing a decrease of injuries. That's the ONLY evidence supplied

https://www.nhtsa.gov/sites/nhtsa.dot.g ... ok2016.pdf

If you dig into the studies, yes, injuries are often reduced but fatalities are marginally higher.

This is completely understandable because 46% of seats are "improperly installed". If you think about systems as a whole, and that's what safety is, there it's really quite silly to think you can attach a contraption to a well designed and tested system (modern cars), and hope the result is universally good.

Same law today, except the age is 8, not 12.

Unless they changed the law recently, you are only required to wear a seatbelt if there is an available seating position that has one.
Can have kids ride in the back of a pickup as long as the younger kids are inside the cab.
Buddy of mine works for WSP in Wenatchee, said they passed that law so the apple pickers wouldn't have to make 4 trips to bring their kids to work.

My son doesn’t turn 2 until June. He’s been 95th percentile for height since the day he was born. We had to turn him front facing 2 months ago (at 20 months) or force him to sit legs crossed in the car seat rear facing. One size fits all laws don’t work for the everyone.

I’m not going to endanger my child cramming him into a rear facing seat because some dumbfuck politicians wanted to appease the screaming yentas.

Comparing all middle school kids against my own, when they were in middle school. This is not going received well! Just have to remind them, it was the Democratic Party that thought this up.
