FBI called to investigate firearms attacks on Duke Energy substations in North Carolina; 40K without power
https://www.utilitydive.com/news/fbi-investigate-firearms-attacks-duke-energy-substations-North-Carolina/637927/
Quote:
Dive Brief:
  • About 40,000 Duke Energy customers remained without power Sunday after at least two substations in Moore County, North Carolina, sustained damage attributed to firearms attacks on Saturday night.
  • State investigators and the Federal Bureau of Investigation have been called in, U.S. Rep. Richard Hudson, R, who represents Moore County, said in a Sunday statement.
  • Substation vandalism, including by gunshot, is a common occurrence, say security experts. The fact that a widespread outage occurred indicates it was “a planned, targeted attack involving multiple substations,” Kevin Perry, former director of critical infrastructure protection at Southwest Power Pool, said in an email. Perry retired in 2018.

I've only seen one possible motive floated in the news stories so far

Online, there has been speculation that the attack was related to opposition to a local drag show.

Seems a bit excessive

Oh, but the narrative...

One of my students is impacted.
No power=
No gas
No working registers in stores
No ATM's
No heat
Food going bad.
This is a wake-up call, our infrastructure is so vulnerable to even minor incidents. Remember snowmageddon a few years ago?
Probably won't get fixed till Thursday.
Surprised this didn't happen in places like Seattle, Portland, LA, and WA DC.
Could be linked to protest of drag show going on that night.

According to the news, they knew what components they were shooting at, and two separate substations.

I remember that attack. Lots of discussion back then that it was a practice run for a larger terrorist attack.

Have heard it was committed with 7.62 rounds.
That’s a Russian round, right?
Could be a message to back off elsewhere in the world.

Was the drag show at an elementary school?

Yeah, when the story broke it was all 'omg domestic terrorists shot up a bunch of power stuff to stop a drag show!'...

My response of ...

'It's hickstown USA... I'm betting they're either tweakers trying to steal the copper, and wanted to disable it first, or a bunch of drunk hillbillies fucking around and not realizing how much they'd fuck stuff up... That's a much more likely explanation than people trying to disable the grid, especially if it's just a 'drag show' they're after.. there are much simpler ways to shut down venues'...

...netted responses ranging from 'You're a bigot racist nazi blah blah if you think this wasn't targeting the drag show'... to '@FBI, look at (username), I bet he did it!'

I've never met a group of people in such need of a good ass kicking.
