Hi all, Just bought my first gun today. Settled on a VP9 after trying a few at the range in Tacoma.
Give me your best “beginner” gun owner advise.

Well, if you bought a VP9 as your first gun, you seem to be headed down a pretty good path already. Buy a boresnake, some CLP and an UpLULA. Welcome to WaGuns!

Welcome. Nice pick on the gun. Considering buying a VP9 for my stepdaughter as their household's first handgun. It's not practice that makes perfect, it's perfect practice that makes perfect Consider getting yourself some professional training at Insights or FAS. Good way to get yourself into good habits from the git go in terms of stance, grip, trigger press, and sight alignment as well as learning gun safety/good gun handling habits and the legalities of armed self defense. Another thing to consider is safe storage. Not a big deal if you live by yourself. If you have kids in the house, consider teaching them the NRA Eddie Eagle rules: Don't touch, Leave, Tell an Adult. Also a pistol lockbox is a good idea if you have kids around. I'm a fan of the simple, mechanical boxes with simplex locks such as: https://www.deansafe.com/collections/handgun-safesWe have the Fort Know and Stealth models with simplex locks.

Congrats on your first gun. Get some training, practice shooting, cleaning it and vote for Gun Rights not Gun Control. That’s all I’ve got.

Thanks everyone. Seems like training is the key and I’ll do some research on training and practice.

Also, as a new gun owner. Where the hell do people get any ammo? The store I got my gun from would only sell me 2 box of 50.

That’s the hard question.
Ammo. Right now. It’s going to cost you (a lot). Hoping in the several weeks to maybe 2 months prices and availability will be “better”

Best Ammoseek.com is a good place to start for looking up ammo pricing and availability. Welcome aboard.

Best advice are always the 4 safety rules.
Gun is always loaded. Don't point at anything you wouldn't kill/destroy or otherwise shoot Do NOT put finger on trigger or even in finger guard until ready to pull that trigger Be aware of what is in front, around, in back and downrange from your target
When shooting try to isolate your trigger finger movement from the firm grip of your remaining fingers. Do finger and hand exercises.
Don't be afraid to ask questions
Be courteous and clean up the land/floor/shooing area,

Sorry didn’t complete my thought.
Benchmark range Ammo prices. Before madness $0.20 per round (aka CPR - cents per round). So that makes a box of 9mm (50 rounds) about $9-10.
Going rate? Right now. $0.50 - $0.70 CPR. Means $25-40 a box Limit to 1-2 boxes at most stores.
Online? Just depends on seller
