I am more about learning to carve wood...it actually wasn't as hard as I thought...also learning about stains.....water based stains suck...they raise the grain and require a lot more work.

I’ve done quite a bit of wood carving Casey. Requires very sharp tools, of varying shapes. V-, U-, straight for the kind of carving you are doing. Chip carving knives are handy too. For bigger stuff, gouges of different sizes, V-shaped and chisels that you strike with a hammer.

For the color you are going for, wood dyes do a much better job than colored stains. The color is much deeper and brighter.

Very good points, no pun intended.

I prefer aniline dyes. They come as a powder you mix in water or alcohol to the desired color and, unlike a stain, they will soak completely through a piece of wood. Great if you dont want to worry about needing to refinish the stock ever again- any dent, scratch, etc will be the same color and can be steamed or sanded out and need no touch up beyond that.

Great tips, I have another stock project that will be dyed......I'll see if I can find the right color in a powered aniline dye
