I'm looking at purchasing a Mauser C96, that the original finish is in severely rough shape, and hardly even existing at all anymore. I was wondering if there's anyone here that would be able to reblue it for me, to factory correct style, or if you'd just recommend it be left alone. Thanks!

Usually, left alone is the correct answer.

Rebluing an old Milsurp? Yeah, i have to vote no unless the collector value is gone from it.

I might add, it's not numbers matching, and it's practically entirely down to the bare metal.

I will deviate from the herd, here. Is it something special, rare, very original, or something that may become special or rare in the near future? Is it something you value for the historical aspect, or something you plan to sell? If the answer to all of the above is no, reblue it. Find somebody that can do a good job of making it look as original as possible, but the idea is to make something nice and pretty, not something historic.

My advice is thus. If it's not a matching numbers gun, it's lost some collector value. Have a smith who KNOWS the C-96 inspect it carefully before you invest in a quality re-blue. No sense spending a chunk of your paycheck to blue something un-safe to shoot.

To me, it's something I'd like to have in my collection for the historical aspect of it, but also knowing what state it's in, it will be nice to have one that I won't feel bad about taking out and shooting.

Well, my position on refinishing milsurps is that it generally should not be done, unless it's necessary to prevent the gun from corroding or falling apart. So, that's a judgment call that each person needs to make.
But if I need something reblued, TINCANBANDIT is the man I'll be talking to.
