...that PMB Pif'd, I'll keep my progress in this thread. And so it began last week. - Spoiler: show
I got about 5 hrs into today. After chipping off what little bark there was left on the live edge, I jumped into belt sanding with 80 grit. Photo in spoiler is after 80 grit both sides. I think I'll finish both sides to a nice finish, and give the cabinet maker options for "live edge up or down" As it is now, I favor live edge up like a few of you folks do. I started working the live edge with a random orbit with 80 grit too - Spoiler: show
As you can see in the top of this next spoiler, the "live edge up" leaves a very narrow Kitchen Island top for bellying up on the other side of the kitchen island for some grub Also in this photo, I put some mineral spirits down after running 1 pass of 120 grit with the belt sander on this side. I have to make another pass with 120, then flip it and work the other side. The grain looks fantastic. (excuse the cotton from wiping it down) - Spoiler: show
This photo was taken after wetting the live edge where worm wood (or beetles?) existed. There are a few areas like this running down this edge. Unsure if I should fill it or leave it as it is not consistent down the edge.... Opinions welcome! - Spoiler: show
Only 3 titties on this slab, I have to hand sand these. This was after a rough out 80 grit. - Spoiler: show
Well, that's all for now. My back is killing me, between doing drywall work in 1 of our 4 x bedrooms this morning and running a sander all afternoon, time to kill the pain with some beer! THanks for looking!

Judging from your other projects and photography, I am expecting to be impressed. That's not pressure, just appreciation for your previous work. I have quite a wheelbarrow full of aches and pains to quench. Expect it'll be a 2 beer night. Very rare here.

When my kids were little all the way through teens, 2 beers used to be my max too. I just had too much responsibility both at home and work. I mean, there *were* exceptions, like holidays. Vacations. Now that I'm retired. I'm up to 3 beers! :)

Continuation of hand sanding edges and live edge yesterday. In the beginning last week--> Belt Sanding I started at 80 grit--> 120 grit. Then orbital sander started at 120 grit, then 150, then 220. Twice on both sides each grit. Then hand handed everything at with a 220 sanding sponge. Twice. I would guess I have close to 16 hrs of total time into the piece so far. My frickin' arms are gonna fall off. The first coat of Old Master Tung/Varnish went on today. Here is the finish close up with no oil. - Spoiler: show
Here is the same section with the first coat of tung/varnish. The grain really pops out. I am wet sanding with a 220 sanding sponge between coats. After each coat dries, I am knocking it down with fine scotch bright pads. - Spoiler: show
This photo is the bottom, before 1st coat. - Spoiler: show
This photo is the bottom after the 1st coat. This is what we live for! Popping those grains out! I have a long way to go. The first couple of coats I am wet sanding. After that the last 6 coats will be fine scotch bright sanding after each coat dries. - Spoiler: show

Nice work, looks great! I think you have to go live edge down for where it is going. It won't be as useful Live up.

Thank you. I really don't care which side is up, but you're right, more room on this side shown!

#2 - Spoiler: show
#3 - Spoiler: show
Twisps or as I call them...TITTIES! - Spoiler: show
Full live edge up profile first coat. - Spoiler: show

Another view of live edge up after 4 coats, in the garage overhead lights. 4 more coats to go on this side. And 2nd photo is why live edge will most likely be down, only 8" across in the mid section. - Spoiler: show

My wood barely gets worked. Pretty soon I'm gonna have to pay someone to do it.
