My old well pump froze and cracked. Should have had heat out there but I was laid up from a bad car accident.

We put a new one in and it runs fine, builds pressure and it seems like we have good pressure in the well house but barely a trickle in the house.

I don't know what to do next, don't usually do much with plumbing, maybe the lines are plugged?

I opened the line downhill from the house and turned on the faucets to try and drain the water lines in the house so they wouldn't freeze, and the pump holds pressure so I don't really think anything is burst or leaking.

Anyone more experienced with this that can point me in the right direction?

Stupid question, but have you checked the main Shut offs? Should be one before it leaves the well house and one where it enters the home (into a filtration system?

As a test, turn off the shutoff valve in the well house and disconnect the line that’s inside the house, route that line somewhere safe for a water flow, and slowly turn the well valve back on. If it flows, then do the same with the hot water heater.

There is a chance you have an air gap somewhere not allowing the water to flow.

Also, hose bibs usually branch off pre water conditioning, and can be non gapped or have a bad hammer gap. Turn those all on as well to release air from the system. They will be your “lowest” point.

Yeah all the shutoff are on, there a hose bib right before the line goes underground to the house and it has good pressure. All the filters are in the well house.

Then check hot water tank. Unhook incoming line.

There's a frost free water spout just before the house, it doesn't have any pressure either.

Maybe it's just the portion of water line that's underground froze up?

It would have to be buried fairly shallow to freeze up like that but its a possibility depending on who buried it.

I would assume based on my own experiences that its a partial blockage from disconnecting/reconnecting the new pump. Part of an old gasket or something got in the line and is blocking the water flow. You'll need to replace the line, or disconnect it in a couple spots and run a snake through it to knock out the blockage.


If its frozen, you can run hot water through hoses to thaw the ground over the pipe. I used something similar on a winter concrete pour years ago. It was very impressive - hot water in a series of hoses and covered up with concrete blankets.

Do you have a pressure tank inside the well house? If so, it also may be partially frozen.

Yeah I have a pressure tank, but we've had a propane heater in there for days, no way anything inside the pump house is frozen.

when you say "new" pump how old?

whats your psi on regulator? if you have pressure there, then yes your main line to the house isn't buried deep enough that it froze

Brand new, but from harbor freight. It's 50psi shutoff. Gauges in the well house show that it's holding pressure just fine.

Maybe check valve reinstalled backwards?
