I had to drill out and re tap the four holes for the vise jaws.
This vise is cast not forged. The bottom was not flat due to this casting seam. So I machined off the seam to make the bottom flat.
Because the bottom was not flat. That caused the base plate to break. So I had a friend weld it up for me.
You might be surprised to find out. I don’t have any specialty tools for cutting steel. So it’s old school chain drilling and hack saw. Here I am fabricating a mounting bracket. I want this vise to hang off the side of my work bench. Holding that huge 5” x 4” , 3/8” thick angle bracket is the vise I will be replacing.
I wire wheeled off the paint and rust. For the handles I heated until they turned purple then quenched in oil. This turned them a nice black/blue. I made some brass bushings and shims to take out some sloppy play. And finished it all off with some new paint. Should be good for another 60 years.

Is anyone else looking for a heavy vise??? I have a few from my dads shop that dont fit in mine. Good vintage stuff... All big heavy duty stuff, one of the underfoot ones is a huge repaired 1865 patent one.
