The Fiancé and I are remodeling our 1912 house. I stripped back all the 7 or 8 layers of wallpaper to reveal some nice, probably cedar tongue and grove lathing. It appears what they did was the lathing on the studs, tarpaper and then wallpaper.

I was planning on re-sealing it(tarpaper or 1/4" drywall or other modern stuff) but she is wants to keep the wood. Anyone have a better way to keep moisture out without pulling the wood? I know there is no moisture barrier on the inside, it has old cellulose blown-in insulation falling out of every knot or outlet.

Why would you need to seal it?

The time to seal the house is when you replace the siding. an air-tight air barrier is the key. Do not underestimate what this important part of the exterior assembly can do for your living spaces.

It sounds like CarDeck? I’d DDG cardeck ceilings, which are common for ideas on how to handle it. I have them and a couple of walls in my house, but it was finished when I moved In. If it’s been there for over 100 years, unless you’ve seen a specific problem, whatever they did was probably correct.

If it was traditional lathe, you’d want to cover it. I’ll refrain from suggesting that you use horsehair plaster.....
