Hey Guys,
I could use some advise. I want to add a 240VAC outlet in my garage.

My panel is flush to the sheetrock, and mounted against a stud on the right side.
I wanted to punch a hole thru that stud and locate a box to put the 240VAC plug in, using a nipple thru the stud and secured in the panel. I've an aquantence that is an electrician, and he's telling me I need to go thru the bottom of my panel, secure my wire 12" below it (to a cross board that I might need to put in), then run the wire up and over the left side of the panel, thru the stud on the right side, and then down into a box.

How is the best way to do this?

I'm not an electrician, but I did burn a house down this one time.

Well, any electrician I've ever met will make sure and let you know how much that advice will cost. I guarantee it's way more than its worth.

I was an electrician in a former life, also burned a house down. You're friend is technically correct, by code the wire needs to be stapled (secured) within 12" of the breaker box and the outlet receptacle box. Or you could surface mount EMT or PVC Electrical conduit and run loose conductors (wires) inside it, between the 2 points. In that case you would use a threaded conduit connector and lock nut at each box. If the panel is on an exterior wall, and the outlet goes on the same wall, it could be run on the outside of the house between points. Might be other ways as well, just hip shooting based on what you mentioned.

Cut the sheet rock. Makes life easier, not hard to repair.

Yes down and through, could be in a conduit if you don't want to staple.

I do want to flush mount the box, and don’t mind cutting the Sheetrock to get to everything.

Do you have room below the box, in the same stud bay?

That would make life easier

First question is do you have room on your panel to add it? Most people don’t think of that. Cut the Sheetrock. The only way it’ll be clean at the finish.
