Used for putting tension on ropes? I could buy into that if there were two holes... Not sure how it would work with one hole, and the half of the pieces with only a partial hole. ETA : Or even a piece shaped like this with no holes would work for rope... An added detail - the ends are rough, the center part of the spoke and the globe part are smoothed, ready for finish.

They are spindles for trim/railing with a dowel run thru the middle. The one is drilled blind since its an end cap spindle. Like this but with a dowel thru the center added.

Have you seen one with pieces like these? I'm not picturing the end cap spindle... In my little view of the world, the end cap spindle would still have a dowel running past the spindle to the newel, if that is what it is for. Maybe newel isn't the right word for the end support in what you are describing. The word Spandrel is used in that drawing... and seems to be pointing at the spindles. That is sure not what a spandrel is in my limited architectural experience. jukk0u wrote: or galley rail spindles. That seems right. I've never seen galley rail spindles with a dowel running through like these would have. But I haven't seen everything.

These guys are for bending/straightening wood chair staves. You heat up the wood until the lignin softens, then use these for leverage.

Auburn RI USA F483 No. 1 A Hey now, that looks like a WaGuns shirt way back there. I used something that looked exactly like this when I was 16 back in the very late seventies riveting brake pads onto brake plates for logging trucks. Filthy friggin work.

It is in fact a "Kick Press". I worked in a light fixture manufacturing company in the early 80's and we had dozens of these. They can be set up for almost any use . Riveting, dimpling, small hole punch.. etc... They are still used in some mills. All they need for power is a heavy girl with one good leg !
