I don't think your method of just welding that spindle to the knuckle is going to last. In fact I'd bet money that you'll lose a front wheel from a failure at that spot, sooner rather than later. It really needs a stronger arrangement than that, but also having it stick out that far just makes it even more prone to failure, and will be very prone to bump steer.

Yea, you could definitly be right! Only one way to find out :) I'm actually not too concerned about it. Most go carts are built this way, and I basically used the same logic, just way stronger components. The vertical rotating part of the spindle has a nearly 1/2" thick steel wall, and the actual axle is about 1-1/4" dia. I preheated both and cranked up the welder to get deeper penetration in the welds. Ill likely do a small gusset on top and bottom to be safe. If this thing didnt have suspension I would agree, but the actual "Impulse" of force wont be that much as the A-arm can rotate vertically to spread that force over a larger distance (W=FxD). And since the A-arms stick out far, they have a greater distance to travel, even lessening the amount of force acting on the axle/spindle at any given moment in time. Another variable is the tires, I purposely used the biggest sized ""3-wheeler" balloon tires I could find. Ill run them at a fairly low PSI, giving them a little bounce. This will also help soften blows.

But I am sure ill break something/screw something up, and you might be right. The bump steer could be an issue, but with this sort of build ill just go for it and solve the problems as they come:)

My expectations on this build are to just have fun in the outdoors, on a fairly limited budget. I have a 2 year old, 4 year old, and #3 on the way, and my plan is to get a small fleet of Go-karts built for off roading with the kids in the futute.

I think it will still do better than my 1999 Ford Escort!

Front didn't have stiff enough shocks so I put a third set on. Ill put a few more little gussets here and there up front, but all the hard stuff is done up front. Now im satisfied with the suspension both front and back.

Negative (pun intended). Im using a Flux welder. Specifically the Titanium Flux 125 from Harbor Freight. Friggin sweet little setup once you get it figured out. Cheap, just works, no gas tank. Downside is lots of splatter, but nothing a $25 HF grinder cant fix.

I'm wondering if a more centrally located and shielded position for the fuel cell might be advisable to avoid its dislocation in event of roll-over?

In any event :thumbsup2:

Yup, you are right. I really don't want to take up space in the mini bed, hence mounting it on the outside. I may build out a little protection for it though.

Working on the bed. Sheet is recessed to help stuff not roll off.

You can beat me with a stick since I'm so obsessed with it, but that fuel cell looks like a wart and a weak spot and your new shelf gave me an idea (no it didn't hurt... much)

How about... I say from the comfort of my easy chair and don't have to break my wallet out... how about a fuel cell of the same dimension but four inches high, as the base of that shelf?

Do you mean right behind the two seats, on top of the rear shelf? That would be a good spot. It definitely is a weak point, but im not planning on any crazy driving for the time being. But im open to thoughts if you see something that looks safer and keeps bed space open.

I was really thinking that the shelf would sit on top of the fuel cell. same length and width as the shelf. If the cell is Five inches high and add another 1 1/2" nestled in between the frame,

you'd probably get the same or more fuel capacity.

This would also center the weight (right to left) of the fuel and cell.
