Very cool. I've always wanted to buildout a 1911 but all the hand-fitting and tools required its too damn involved for me; I'd eff-up it all up and have to scrap too many parts.

Please post your progress.

<hijack>As long as you're patient, it's not too bad. I bought a kit and frame from Sarco. It took me several weeks to build it (and it's not completely finished yet). I was able to get any help I needed from the 1911 gurus (including the OP) on here very quickly. And I don't recall having to buy any new tools. I did need to borrow a couple (also from the OP), but his time and tools were graciously lent.

Give it a shot, the worst that happens is you're out a few hundred bucks, but you'll be able to recover most of it by selling the pieces. </hijack>

Wow. I replaced the mainspring housing on my wife's 1911 and felt like a REAL gunsmith...for a few minutes. To start from scratch, with (correctly) slightly oversize parts that need to be filed to fit, that's a real art.

You know, if everyone would stick the blueprint, there wouldn’t been a need for such a fluctuation in parts dimensions.

For example, some trigger shoes come .920 tall while some frames need a .875 shoe, and, you get to have fun with how much material you need from the bottom of bow to the bottom of the shoe. Some triggers have more, some have less. Sole frame need more, some need less.

How come it doesn't have a groove beneath the slide stop? Do you have to pay extra for that?

How many labor hours will you have in it when done?

It's an aftermarket accessory that most people op for. If you want it in a standard package, I can machine it in after the finish work has been done.

Less time than Obama spent on vacation.

I can't say. Things happen that have to be addressed and the hours add up. If I were building a more standard pistol, about 60 hours.

VERY nice. Fit of the beavertail looks well done; it also looks like you've already blended the contours of the slide, tangs and the grip safety as well. Are you going to checker the rear of the slide, or just go with a matte blast?

Also...is that checkering on the front strap? What size did you go with?

Suggestion: get a good INCANDESCENT lamp for your close in work. Fluorescent doesn't cut it--and LED's suck for close in work.

Thank you.

The contour of the bottom of the grip safety has been finished, the top though has been roughed in. The side to frame blending hasn't been touched yet.

Yes, the front strap is checkered and that was done at the factory and it is 30 LPI as well as the checkering on the mainspring housing.

I won't be checkering the rear of slide.
