Just returned today from a 4 day PD hunting trip.
Our final day of shooting was epic. We got to shoot an area that is normally off limits due to cattle grazing. HOWEVER no cattle this year. This area was so target rich that 3 of us shot for 6 hours virtually non stop. In all my years of coming out here, I have NEVER seen this level "target density".
Our final tally for the 4 days was 545 confirmed. Not bad considering the first three days were a little slower. Between the 3 of us, we tallied 224 on the final day. And yes we know how to count.

Tools of the "trade"...
Savage Target Action,
McGowen custom twist cut barrel,
Nightforce NXS 5.5-22x56 scope,
Protekor bags,
Custom built shooting bench,
Swarovski 10x42 binos,
Vortex HD 4500 laser range finder binos.
These will range a reflective target at 4500 yards and a deer sized animal at 1750 yards. Prairie Dogs have been ranged at 800+ yards on this trip. These are a new addition this year.
So far they have been right on as far as accuracy.
Of course the ammo is custom hand loads with 53gr V-Max bullets traveling at 3200 fps and a matching "Ballistic Table"

Wow Randy, sounds like a hell of a trip!

Are you just sitting in one place and shooting, or are you moving around the fields?

How far away can you consistently range a prairie dog with these? For example, "At XX yards I will get a reading 95% of the time."

I've used a couple of different types of rangefinding monoculars, and I've been pretty disappointed with the overall performance. They never seem to live up to the advertised distance, and it takes a pretty big target to get even half of the advertised distance. With prairie dogs, even within a couple of hundred yards, it's pretty hit and miss. I guess what they do for me is work well enough that I get better at estimating distances myself, so at least I have a chance of a hit . . . .

I'm sure your Vortex binoculars are several classes above what I have, but I'm wondering just how good they are.

The Vortex HD 4500 binos are awesome. Super clear and easy to use.
Consistent ranging is all dependent on how steady you are.
Obviously at long ranges, this is even more important.

From 100 to 300 yards.....99% +
From 301 to 500 yards.....95% +
At a 1000 yards, I could successfully range an 18" steel target 99% of the time.

Again, being able to hold steady is the most important in successful and consistent ranging.
These are so nice that I didn't even look thru the Swarovski binos...
