Grabbed the trusty Savage .300wm, my licenses, tags and special permit, Picked up my partner in North Bend at 3:30 then drove over to Grand Coulee, Actually closer to Creston, to a farm that we had obtained written permission to hunt with our doe permits. Checked in with the land owner at 8am and asked where we should go. He just said follow me. Led us out to his shop and pointed out to his onion field. Spotted ten does right away at around 600yds. Sit down he says, he offers coffee, water, snacks etc. and says they will be here shortly.
Grabbed a chair and BS’d with the him for an hour or so, while watching them move into small orchard behind the shop. He said I had to much gun for the 25yd shot, and I agreed, so I unholstered my Raging Bull.44mag Loaded with 300gr Hornaday DoubleTaps He just shook his head
Don’t remember the exact powder charge, but it was near max. Loaded 50 rounds a few years back for just such a moment. This was the first “live” test and OMG
Hit was a broad side neck shot about 3-4 vertebrae below the skull Caught the spine square and literally picked her up off the ground and tossed her 3 feet from where she had stood. Not so much as a twitch
The rest of the herd just stood there trying to figure out WTH happened Then the rancher looks at my partner and points to the wall Where there was some really old .22 rifle hanging and says” use that, it’s loaded” Aim for the ear hole he says, which he did and same result, just a lot quieter less dramatic.
The exit would on mine was approximately 5” in diameter, completely severed the spine, blew up a little bit of neck meat, and left a big puddle on the field. Only thing left holding the head on was skin. Couldn’t find an exit hole on the other, no blood, nothing
Fired up the tractor, took both to the barn to hang them for skinning Turned the game on the radio, GO HAWKS!, and we were done and loaded by 10:30 Stopped for ice in Wilbur and for breakfast at the Electric City Bar and Grill and watched the rest of the game. Home and hung in the garage before 6pm Easiest hunt of my life, by far
Busy day, many miles and hours driving. Can’t believe I’m still awake But the freezer will be full, and I still have buck, elk, bear and cougar tags to fill I may need another freezer.....

NOOICE!....Any pictures? My torn ATF in my R ankle is keeping me out of the game this year. I get surgery in a couple months to fix it, followed by months of PT. I'll be ready to go next year.

Know the area well. Seen many a herd(s) hiding out on private property(s). Not too many areas over there that are open, compared to about 20 miles west of there, where there are open lands for hunting.
Lucky stiff you.

Years ago a friend and I drew doe tags in the Wilber GMU. We made contact with a farmer to let us hunt his land, Sr just said if we shoot em in the fields there better not be any drag marks across his winter wheat!!! Dreading carrying out a couple of deer a long way we got a good nights rest. Opening morning we drove down to the gate at first light, stepped out of the truck, loaded up and BANG BANG. Our season was over in seconds... right at the gate!!!
